Color page undo not functioning correctly

PostSun May 16, 2021 3:28 pm

I'm hoping there's an obscure setting here because this makes no sense.

Color page. Adjust the color wheel. Don't like it, want to go back to the start. Hit Ctrl+Z to undo. It doesn't go back to the start, it goes half, a third, or maybe a quarter of the way back. Hit undo 2 or 3 more times then I'm back...somewhere. Why is it doing this?

I've included a video that shows what is happening. Pardon the audio as I don't have a proper mic.

There is a built-in delay between wheel adjustments and the saving of an Undo level. There's no way to adjust that delay.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

You also have to consider that the color page is designed to accommodate people making simultaneous adjustments with two hands. A programmer buddy of mine recommended that it should work like vi, where the undo level gets progressively larger, the more times you activate it, sort of like how deleting text on an iPhone steps from letters to words, to paragraphs.

I think this is expected behavior. It's easier to do some of this with a control surface, and there are Reset buttons to eliminate specific Lift/Gamma/Gain adjustments. Another technique is to temporarily store the new grade as a Gallery still, then make a big change and compare it to the old still.

And yet another thing we often do is to spread out the correction to multiple nodes, so you do the adjustments in stages and steps. That way, you can turn the individual nodes on and off and check the effects of the change on down the line. A lot of it boils down to a "better like this? Or better like that?" approach with clients. I try to be prepared to always undo any changes to give the filmmakers more options.

Thanks Marc. I am by no means a colorist. It would be cool if there were maybe a "novice" setting to allow what I'm looking for. If the wheel is already adjusted but I wanted to make it a little different and don't like my change then I can't really go back because it's hard (at least for an untrained eye like mine) to see when to stop hitting undo. I just think it's weird that a single click and drag creates multiple, seemingly random undo points. Ce est la vie.
