Preserving Render Cache with Duplicate Timeline

PostMon May 17, 2021 3:41 pm

I've just recently upgraded to DR17.2 from whatever the final version of DR16 was.

I'm working on finishing a short film shot mostly on R3D, but also some BRAW and effects shots that have been round-tripped with ProRes444 files, so I'm making heavy use of the Smart Cache feature to get smooth playback for everything.

One of the steps of my workflow in DR16 was to duplicate my timeline at the beginning of the day, especially if I anticipated making large changes that day. This was relatively painless. It would take maybe 5-10 minutes to duplicate the timeline, but once done I would have my entire timeline still fully cached and I could get right to work.

Since upgrading to DR17, whenever I duplicate a timeline, my new timeline is not cached at all and I have to let the machine spend hours rendering it.

Is there something I'm missing now with DR17, some checkbox I need to Tick to have it duplicate the Render Cache along with the timeline? This is something that just worked in DR16, I don't remember doing anything special.

Thanks for your time.

EDIT: I asked this same question over on Reddit and had a suggestion to use the Duplicate timeline (without render cache) as the backup and keep the original Cached timeline as the working. Obviously this is a great suggestion and a good workaround to my problem. I'm still curious to find if there's any solution to my original question about the software's behavior when duplicating timelines.

I just ran a brief test. The Duplicated timeline did also duplicate the Cache.

Or at least, the same clip was already Cached in the Duplicate.

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.
