Import 16 bit 4096x2160 files into Resolve 17 free version?

PostThu May 20, 2021 11:05 pm

The free version of Resolve limits export to 4k UHD (3840x2160). However, is it possible to import 4k 4096x2160 16 bit DPX files, do a few simple cuts, and then export them as 4K UHD 16 bit files? Or would I need to upgrade to the Studio version to do this?

I'm currently using the free version of Resolve 17.2 on an M1 Mac Mini. Thanks in advance for any help!

Its not the resolution but the bit depth on the free version that will stop you.
Pretty sure its limited to 8 bit.
You do get a lot of bang for your buck for $299.

Should work. As far as I know the bit depth limitation is only for H.264 or derivatives.

Should work on the Mac.

If you need to do 4K and you need to do 16-bit, then I'd say spend the money and get Resolve Studio and don't expect to do it for free.

The resolution and bit depth is not relevant for source clips as a limitation of free vs studio for non compressed codecs, and even some compressed codecs, depending on codec licensing rules.

in this case 16 bit dpx is fine. Its the timeline resolution, frame rate and render res thats limited in free, UHD and 60fps is limit.

Thanks so much everyone for all of your help.

So if I understand correctly, using the free version of Resolve 17 I should be able to import the 4096x2160 16bit dpx files. The timeline will be limited to UHD 3840x2160, so any work I do (and any exports) will be at this resolution. The 16bit color should not create any issues.

One final question - are there any settings that I need to check in order to be sure that the color remains 16 bit? I know I will need to select DPX 16 bit when I choose my export render settings, but is there anything else I need to do? I see bit depth settings under Project Settings> video monitoring, but I assume this has no effect on the actual footage.

@Marc Wielage - Yes, you're absolutely right, if I were regularly doing work that required .dpx files I would definitely be using Studio. All my current work is on a micro-budget documentary in 1080P. The .dpx files will be from an unrelated film scan from which I will need to export a few selects for another company. That said, I really want to support Resolve and will probably upgrade to Studio in the near future - if only to play around with the Speed Editor :-)
