Stutters playback 17.2

I am noticing that the stuttery playback I have been experiencing is not present when playing back in the color page. Not sure what this might mean…

You really don't give us anything to go on. Media specs, project settings, etc.

Sorry:
UHD timeline @ 25
Smart cache (set for 2 secs idle but at times 2 mins before render activity showing)
RED 5k
Big tiffs
Converted vob’s ProRes SD blown to UHD
Many Fusion comps, many with particles

The interesting bit being that it is stuttery in edit timeline but smooth in color page
I see Resolve straining while my task manager shows low CPU use, low GPU use yet RAM is 90/128 and little disk activity.
AMD 3950X 16/32 but I often notice just a handful of cores working hard - any way to force the load to spread?

I can play the RED 5k with a grade straight off the timeline…adding noise reduction and more slows it.
The Fusion comps seem to be the biggest problem.

Surely, the render (in background? After 2 secs, per the settings) should cease when you want to play another part of the program but it appears that once it has started the (background?) render, you can forget smooth playback anywhere else on the timeline. It might be that in the color page the render in background coding is different?

Could it be that the Fusion render engine needs a grease and oil change?
Or a rebuild?
Or license the Ludicrous Speed Package from Tesla?

When I am trying play the video on the time line even though after creating the proxy video the playback is very choppy and lot of shuttering. BMD needs to fix this issue asap as we are unable to edit videos at all and this is hampering a productions.

There are lot of bugs specially for video playback on the timeline

My Timeline 1920*1080 HD 30 FPS

Source Footage : 30FPS

Please find the Specs on my Signature.

I normally edit 1080p and while working i will convert the source media to proxy media and specs that are sufficient for me .

Show All Video Frames is already enabled

Still the playback is choppy

I do not get any error it may look like BMD needs to fix the issue

My GPU memory is 4GB VRAM and its selected and detected as CUDA

Hope we can get fix at the least

Man, that's gonna be rough even with a really heavy-duty system.

My suggestions would be:

1) use an SSD (preferably a RAID0) as a source drive, on a very fast bus (USB-C or Thunderbolt 3)

2) render-in-place the Fusion comps so they're already done and ready for final color

3) The Red 5K should be OK -- at least I can tell you they'd play back in real time on our creaking Mac Trashcan, which I think is not as powerful as your windows system. But we only color-corrected HD on that system. When we did render, we'd switch everything over to 4K, switch the render speed down to 10fps (or even 5fps), and cross our fingers.

NR and OFX processing could create more of a strain. Worst case, transcode everything out as 4K DNxHR HQX, reconform, and see how that plays. Creating Proxies within Resolve would be another option.

4GB of VRAM for the GPU is very tiny these days. I would suggest upping that if possible and see if it helps. I've got maybe 2GB of VRAM in the 16" MacBook Pro GPU, and it "generally" can do light-duty editing with no problem, and I routinely conform and edit 2K and 4K ProRes 444 without any problem (from an SSD source drive).

Hey Marc,

Thank you for your response.

I have the source media on a SSD drive USB-C and the proxy media is also set on that drive.

As I mentioned earlier I normally edit 1080 HD thats enough.

I had to move back to Sony Vegas Pro for Editing my project and the playback on the timeline is worth than BMD Resolve s current version

BMD fixed the Startup for Resolve but i feel that the code is broken or its not talking to other various components for timeline

Currently the GPU prices are artificially raised due to this pandemic and buying GPU is now is not worth it

Hoping for the prices to fall and production to start

I read BMD forum some one wrote that BMD Resolve version 17 playback is smooth

Hope BMD Dev team can get an immediate patch for the playback issues

"I had to move back to Sony Vegas Pro for Editing my project......"

Your computer is from 2014 and Sony Vegas Pro 13 is from 2014 .... so they fit together!

I uninstalled the Studio completely and reinstalled the Studio now the playback is smooth even after selecting the proxy media.

The take away here is do not update the Studio instead fresh install the applications in this way the issue gets resolved
