Regular crashes with Resolve 17.2

PostThu May 20, 2021 8:37 pm

I am a Resolve newbie, with no video editting experience.
I am a very experienced IT person.
I had trouble with Resolve 16. Was going to abandon it, but 17.2 came out just when I had a real project to do.
Upgraded to 17.2.
Old 'play' projects came across - though had never succeeded in doing much with them.
Created a new project. added some media.
Moved one or two bits of media on to the timeline.
When I try to play through the media, the system crashes. Restart PC, reload Resolve. Most of what I have done has been remembered - but very quickly, the system crashes again ...

System - Dell Inspiron 15R. 16Gb memory, 1024 GB Hard drive - lots of space left. 2nd screen.
When running Task Manager in parallell, loading Resolve makes to disk run at 100% for several minutes, but evenually calms down. Memory usually stays below 70%. WiFi peaks, but doesn't max out.
I have been unable to diagnose a cause of crashing.
Blackmagic RAW Speed Test attached.
Media in pool is a few .jpg and .mp4 created on a smartphone. jpg 3264x1836 pixel. or 3264x2448
mp4 are either 1920x1080 or 3840x2160

Any ideas?

moved to Resovle forum

can review the FAQs above.. provide the GPU details of your system and see the NFO and crash log section to post here.

Its likely a hardware limitation or config.

The probable bottleneck is that spinner hard drive, especially if it is a 5400rpm one which it most likely is. It just cannot get the data off it fast enough. You really need an SSD. What GPU does it have? This is crucial to Resolve working or not.
These are the recommended minimum specs for Resolve.
Resolve Studio 20.0 build 49
Dell XPS 8700 i7-4790, 24GB RAM, 2 x Evo SSDs, GTX1060/6GB (572.16 Studio Driver), Win10 Home, Speed Editor, Faderport 1, Calibrated Eizo ColorEdge CS230 + BenQ & Samsung monitors for UI, Canon C100mk2, Zoom H2n.

GPU 0 Intel HD Graphics Family
GPU 1 AMD Radeon(TM) HD 8670M 2GB DD R3 OpenCL benchmark 5366 https://browser.geekbench.com/opencl-benchmarks Driver version 15.200.1045.0 22Jun2015
Hard Drive 1TB 5400RPM SATA ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB

I can't see any reason from the minimum system requirements - unless for some reason Blackmagic design desktop video 10.4.1 is not auto-installed with the Resolve package. I did not see any mention anywhere that it is a separate install.

Hard drive does not appear to be 100% prior to crashing.

You only need the Blackmagic Desktop Video if you are using Blackmagic hardware such as a Decklink. The minimum system requirements are published to illustrate a system that should be capable of at least working with HD material. The greater the amount of dedicated vram on the gpu the better the video performance will be, plus being able to handle 4k footage. Performance is also affected by what your data is stored on. A5400 rpm HDD is slow, especially if you are also playing your clips from there. A separate, preferably internal SSD is much better for clip storage.
As an example I have an SSD system drive for programs, an SSD for video clips, and an SSD for the database and cache files.

Hear what you say about SSD - but I don't have one, and this editing is an experiment.
I created a new database on an SD card and created a new project on that.
Whilst not particularly fast, it serves to separate data-disk action from program-disk action on Task Manager.
I loaded a few .mp4s into the media pool, ensuring they were all 1920x1080. Removing the possibility that crashes were due to higher resolution .mp4s or due to .jpg use.
I was able to place several one by one on the timeline, trimming start and end of each before adding the next. Got through about 6.
It was only when I tried playing through more than one on the timeline that it crashed.
Restarted PC, reloaded Resolve. Waited till program-disk stopped maxing at 100% (data-disk did nt max out).
Tried to play back from start position. OK. Then played forward. Screen froze.
Searched for log info. Unable to upload ResolveDebug.txt file here so last few lines are:
