Resolve 17.2 locks computer during render

Tried many things, including reducing render performance, and my machine still crashes during rendering a 30 minute video. Locks the machine up, no response to keyboard input or reset. Worth noting that this machine has never done this, and has been extremely reliable otherwise, including rendering with several other NLEs, gaming, etc. Saw a thread that suggested a PSU? Odd that no other app can create this condition.

Win 10 Pro
MSI i9 9990
48 GB Memory
AMD Vega 56

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hi

Your cpu has 2 memory channels and you use 48gb of ram ! How many sticks do you use and what are the size ?

Hi

Your ram composition is wrong!

It is a very bad idea to mix ram size. If you go for speed and your cpu has 2 memory channels ... then use only 2 ram sticks - if you choose to use 4 ram sticks ... then they must be the same size and timing! Does it matter in terms of running programs? Yes, it can!

Ole,

I appreciate the reply. I have built more than a few machines over the years. As long as sticks are matched as pairs in a given channel, it's not a problem. BTW, this rig can run Prime95 for hours with no issue. Same for the Intel processor diagnostic.

Were this my problem, there are three steps I would take to solve it.

1. Wipe the system and reinstall Windows and only the software necessary for work. No games, email, office, development, security, etc.

2. Remove the 2 8GB sticks

3. Upgrade to an RTX card from nVidia as soon as they become available.

If the work needed to be delivered before 3 was possible, then I'd look to a friend or colleague who might have appropriate hardware. Failing that, I'd have to look into hiring another professional to get it done while I was waiting for 3 to become possible.

Jim,

Thanks for the suggestions. While a new install might fix this, the system is used in production, so the downtime isn't an option. However, I might try this at some point with a spare drive if all else fails.

As for the memory sticks, it's a common misconception that you can't use different sizes in a four slot board. You can, as long as they're in matched pairs in the correct dual channel slots. However, it could be that there's a bad spot in one of the DIMMs, so this still might be worth a try.

As to the Radeon card, I can easily believe this thing is suspect. After really spotty experiences with AMD, and especially driver issues, this is the last one I'll every buy.

I did however find a temporary workaround. De clocking the CPU by about 15% yields stable renders. Not a fix, but good enough to get the current project done. Also still makes me think of the PSU as a suspect.

Just wanted to follow up for those that might stumble across this with the same problem. Indeed, it was the power supply. It seemed unique to Resolve because the other NLE in use at the time never utilized the CPU as fully as does Resolve during a render. Multiple renders have since been completed. The system has not experienced a single freeze since.
