Four quick Questions

PostThu Jun 03, 2021 12:29 am

1) Will v16.8 run on an M1 Mac using Rosetta? Don't care if it's a bit slower.

2) If it it can run, can I use Uninstall Resolve v17.2 and then install v16.8?

3) Don't use a database so I don't care about it. Do I need to delete the one created when I installed v17.2 or is it auto-removed when I uninstall Resolve v17.2?.

4) Can a custom keyboard shortcut file be moved from v16.8 to a v17.2 installation? I ask because I can see that v17.2 has multiple shortcut assignments that are different from 16.8.

Thank you

- Yes

2) If it it can run, can I use Uninstall Resolve v17.2 and then install v16.8?
- Yes. I presume you mean 16.2.

3) Don't use a database so I don't care about it. Do I need to delete the one created when I installed v17.2 or is it auto-removed when I uninstall Resolve v17.2?.
- You're using a Disk database. You can backup the database from the project manager in case you need it later and remove it manually. Details in FAQ

4) Can a custom keyboard shortcut file be moved from v16.8 to a v17.2 installation? I ask because I can see that v17.2 has multiple shortcut assignments that are different from 16.8.
- It may work but with some incompatibilities and warnings. From the Keyboard customisation window, click the [...] to export or import preset files. It is suggested that you recheck the customised shortcuts in 16.2.8 after importing. If there are issues, you can choose to remove the preset in the same menu, and retain the file for when you reinstall a newer version.

Hearing v16 can run an M1 is the best news I've heard. I have zero need for anything added to create 17. I do understand why BM felt the need to create a product for the top editors in the world, but Fusion and Fairlight are simply not needed by the many many who edit and color-grade FHD/UHD video. In fact at least 1/3 of 16 will never be used by most people: videotape, film, SDI output, Remote editing, etc.
I've been editing with Resolve since v11 and never used a database.

Another part of the problem is certain people who keep insisting that one can't do anything unless they have a massive system. Always got to have more power! You know what they say about men who need more power.

Well, you are using a disk database as that is how Resolve stores projects. The first thing displayed when you open Resolve is the Project Manager which is showing you what is in the database.
Resolve Studio 20.0 build 49
Dell XPS 8700 i7-4790, 24GB RAM, 2 x Evo SSDs, GTX1060/6GB (572.16 Studio Driver), Win10 Home, Speed Editor, Faderport 1, Calibrated Eizo ColorEdge CS230 + BenQ & Samsung monitors for UI, Canon C100mk2, Zoom H2n.

I should have said I didn't "knowingly" used a database. I have noticed that projects that were finished years ago and their source media deleted years ago needlessly linger on. I see the value in having this functionality but now that I've set auto-open Last Project I find it so much faster to get back to work.

Yes v16 seems to run on M1 mac! :D

I was prompted to erase old v17 DB and to create a new v16 DB.

Very happy camper to have the super reliable v16 back -- with Optimization!

Anyone know why BM said the M1 needed v17?

Because it's native and speedier. Many older apps run under Rosetta2, always worth trying.
But of course BM wanted to show off with a fast port to new technology.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Just remember that any projects you started or opened (and therefore converted) in v17 will now no longer open in v16.
