Hello everyone,

I am just getting started with video editing and am brand new to Davinci Resolve. I have already used the search feature on the forum and searched on google to no avail, which makes me think this effect probably doesn't exist in the program, but I am hoping it is just hiding somewhere.

When I was using Corel there was an effect that would automatically create an animation of the image being 'drawn' or 'sketched' as if by a pencil, there was an even an option for enabling a little pencil that would move across the image. I see in Resolve there is a static pencil effect, but what I am looking for is something that will make it look as though the video frame is being drawn in real time by hand.

If Resolve doesn't have this effect, is there somewhere I might be able to source this effect and important it into Resolve?

You can animate "write on" for each individual stroke in the Paint tool. If you were to select all the strokes and animate the write on they would all start and finish at the same time. I don't think this is what you're looking for. I see how this could be handled by a Fuse in Fusion. I'm unaware if anyone has written something like this. You can ask in the Steakunderwater forum.

I think what you are looking for is, in a Fusion clip, to insert a Paint node, set it to Stroke (not Multistroke), and then change the Stroke Animation setting to Write On. Then, when you click and draw something, a series of keyframes will be created that emulate the timing of your drawing motions.

The motions can get "cut off" if the clip is too short, so I suggest making sure your video clip (or Fusion Adjustment Clip) length is sufficient before you enter the Fusion tab and start drawing.

The effect you are describing is a preset effect unique to Corel. It does not exist in any other editing software.
You will need to manually create a similar effect in Fusion and save it as a preset.

Thanks for the help everyone! It's too bad Resolve can't do this, but using your advice I've more or less recreated the effect by clipping off the first few seconds of the video, applying the sketch effect to it, painting the entire image over with the surrounding colour in fusion and then animating an eraser to remove the white and reveal the sketch underneath, to make it look like it's being drawn...sort of lol. Doesn't quite look how I wanted, but I think it's as close as I'll get with Resolve.
