Resolve Studio 17.2.1 Source Viewer Freezes and Staggers

PostFri Jun 11, 2021 11:37 am

Hello!

After upgrading to Studio 17.2.1 from 17.2, my source viewer became very glitchy and unusable.
There are posts about similar issues so I wonder if it's a widespread bug or an issue with my system.

17.2 worked fine, but since 17.2.1, when I try to scrub footage, or play even short audio files (including fairlight sound effect library), the system locks up and freezes with a glitchy stagger forward every 10-15 seconds or so. When I hit pause, after a couple seconds it all comes back to life. But when I hit play again, the staggering starts. The software never crashes however.

Sometimes I start playing a footage in the source viewer and it plays fine for 10-20 seconds, then the staggering starts, rendering the source viewer useless and finding footage impossible.
The strange part is, everything on the timeline is fine. If I drag a footage/audio to the timeline, I can scrub through it fine, it plays without any hiccups.

Based on other posts so far I tried doing a clean install of Resolve, a clean install of Nvidia Studio Drivers, disconnected the Speed Editor from Bluetooth. Issue remains.

Hardware is Win10 desktop PC, 32 GB RAM, GeForce 1050Ti 4GB VGA. I only work with 1080P footage from a Canon m50, footage is on an SSD drive and Resolve is installed on an NVMe SSD.

Is there anything else I could try? Thank you!

I have the same issue, again. Also on the edit at cut pages.

Totally clean installs of Studio 17.1 and Nvidia Studio driver. New database too.

You should have no problem with HD footage, especially in the source viewer. What actual GPU driver are you using? Have you made sure that in Preferences/System/Memory and GPU that CUDA and your 1050ti are selected, and not OpenCL and any onboard graphics? If you have onboard graphics, try disabling it in Device Manager.
I have set my GPU up manually and this is what I see.

I unpaired my Speed Editor from BT.

Problem solved. At least in my case.

Update. I updated to 17.2.1 and all is well. Haven't tried Bluetooth and SE yet.

All my settings are correct (I only have the one VGA and the integrated graphics are disabled in the BIOS) and I'm still having issues. I have reinstalled Resolve, did another couple of VGA driver clean installs, no luck.
I am using a BT mouse and keyboard, but I hooked them all up with cables and I plugged the Speed editor in with a cable, disabled BT entirely. Issue still persists. I factory reset the Speed Editor, I tried completely eliminating the Speed Editor, same issue.

When I hit play to try to view a footage in the source viewer, or even just an audio track, when it starts staggering and freezing up, I am checking the task manager and nor my CPU or GPU works hard at all and I have plenty of RAM left to work with.
What I noticed on the Edit page when I create a new empty timeline and I have that in focus, then scrubbing through footage or audio files in the source viewer works fine. When I switch back to my working timeline, trying to view the same video/audio in the source viewer and the freezing begins. On the Media page, viewing video/audio in the source viewer always freezes. The program never crashes though, when I hit space again to stop playback, in 10-15 seconds or so I comes back to life. And when I drag and drop video/audio to the timeline, it plays as expected, I can scrub through the timeline as fast as I want with zero hiccups.

At this point I am at a loss of what else I could try. I am trying to eliminate things that could cause this, and so far it seems like the BT is not the problem (tested without), the VGA is not the problem (clean studio driver installs, tried newest and older drivers), there's plenty of RAM (usually 8-9 GB is utilized out of 32), the SSD works fine (how can I test this?) and the CPU seems to work fine as well.

I would appreciate any pointers because I am on a tight schedule and this is seriously slowing down my workflow.

I am having the same issue, and it appears to be getting worse.

I have checked my GPU settings, and have no Bt devices connected. it now takes all day to make small changes that should only take a moment or two.

If you have the keyboard, mouse, and Speed Editor all wire connected and still have problems, it points to something else causing the problems. I am running my system with a wireless keyboard and mouse and the Speed Editor on Bluetooth with no problems at all.
If you are using an Nvidia GPU re-install the driver doing a clean install.

same issue here. Audio files stagger to playback in media pool and sound library...but once dropped onto timeline they playback mostly ok.

I have been having this problem for over a week. It is intermittent -- DR Studio will be working fine then suddenly everything is dead slow and unusable. Along with it, Windows Explorer (using Task Manager) suddenly starts using 5% -15% of CPU time.

Another problem I've been having is that my Speed Editor will not connect over BT. Wondering if these were connected, I watched Task Manager's display as I plugged the Speed Editor in over USB. Explorer's CPU usage dropped from ~10% to nothing in a few seconds and DR started responding again.

I'd rather use BT for the Speed Editor, but until BMD fixes the problem, it seems that a work-around might be to keep it plugged in via USB.

The more I think about it, the more I think this problem started after I updated the Speed Editor firmware. Resolve doesn't have to be running for there to be a problem with my PC -- at least very high CPU usage by Windows Explorer. As soon as I plug the Speed Editor into a USB port, Explorer is happy and drops to almost zero.

Could this high usage by Explorer be a result of it continually attempting to connect via BT (and failing)? If so, how do I stop it other than keep the Speed Editor constantly connected or moving it far away?

How do I revert to the previous SE firmware?

I am also having this problem shortly after installing 17.2.1.

what seems odd to me is that even after I quit out of resolve the resolve.exe is still running as you can see in the task manager which I have attached. I closed it out like I always do five minutes ago but still running.

Any help?

Thank you.

Stopped Davinci in the task manager and restarted. This time it is playing back normally. Of course I haven't done anything yet except playback but I wanted to see if it made any difference. I now have different task manager for Davinci which I have attached.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.

I have been working in resolve with no issues as far as freeze and stutter. So I took another task manager screen shot and it looks just like the last.

The task manager screen shot is attached.

Thank you.

And this time when I closed down Davinci, it was cleared out of task manager. I have attached.

Interesting, I hope.

I have also been having this problem for several weeks now. When I try to play, click on a clip, move a clip, adjust the gain, etc.. it takes many seconds to respond. Makes it extremely difficult to work in these conditions.

I tried doing a clean install of the quadro rtx driver 471.11 but that did not solve the problem.

Blackmagic should make this a priority. This is really bad.
