Artifacts after uploading to Youtube

PostFri Jun 11, 2021 3:24 pm

So I am very new to Resolve and still trying to get it all figured out. I was using PowerDirector prior to using Resolve. I Have noticed since moving to Resolve that when I upload my videos to Youtube I see a lot of artifacts in the video, I do not see these when I upload a video created in PowerDirector. Also when I watch the created Resolve video on my computer it looks fine it seems Youtube is doing something to the video that only affects Resolve and not PowerDirector. I have tried all kinds of settings when rendering in
I am using Studio 17
Resolve and codecs and still no joy. Any suggestions?

Thanks much

It would help to know the delivery parameters you're using with Resolve. I do not use the YouTube template in Resolve because it is pretty tragic (IMHO).

Format: Quicktime
Codec: H.265
Resolution: 1920x1080 HD
Frame Rate: 59.94
Quality: 120000 Kb/s
That's about the only settings I have messed with everything else I leave default.

My preference is to export a Cineform AVI file. The results come out pretty good on YouTube.

The files are large, though. Good upload speeds really help.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Don't forget YT re-encodes your upload. What I do before rendering is change the Timeline resolution to UHD and use the Best setting when rendering. Yes the file size is larger and takes longer to upload, but with the higher bandwidth used by YT for UHD artifacts are usually eliminated.
This is my channel trailer which gives you an idea of what it looks like doing it this way.

All the original footage is 1080 50fps h264 35Mbps shot with a Canon G40. UHD resolution is 3840x1670 50fps h264 Best.

Charles Bennett, do you keep the format/codec as Quicktime/H.264, or change it to MP4 and some other codec? The UHD resolution you're referring to is the 3840 x 2160, right? I was considering changing the resolution on my projects as well, but was worried that it would distort or produce incompatibility somehow- I also usually keep the "Quality" set to "Automatic: Best" for YouTube- not sure if you do the same, or if you use the more granular "restrict to" option.

Cool channel trailer! Makes me want to learn about trains :D .

Thank you Peter, glad you liked it.

Alexander, I tend to use the Quicktime setting so get .mov files, but no reason why you cannot use mp4. They are both container formats and the h264 inside is identical.
You are correct as to the resolution. I like to have some of my videos in widescreen so set the vertical resolution to 1670. For this I also change the scaling to Scale Full Frame With Crop. I can then adjust the vertical framing of the image if I need to.
As to render bit rate, I've used both Best and a bit rate restricted to 80Mbps. Now I usually use Automatic-Best.

Just use NVENC H265 at PQ 12. Upres to UHD as already mentioned.

Sounds great- thank you! I'll incorporate some of those settings in my next render and see how it goes- I'm still on Resolve 16 until I get my new laptop, so I think some of those options you mentioned (setting vertical resolution) or that Peter Jackson mentioned (H.265 Codec) might only be available in Resolve 17 or Studio.

Those resolution and scaling settings are in vers 16.xx as well. For h265 and NVENC you will indeed need 17.xx Studio.
