h264 native renders 13% faster than h264 NVIDIA?

PostThu Jun 17, 2021 1:41 am

Hi All.

Confused. Just bought and installed Studio and was hoping I might have a small gain with GPU rendering. Exported 2 minutes of simple sequence.

Mp4/h264/native took 1.07
Mp4/h264/NVIDIA took 1.24
QT/h264/native took 1.05
QT/h264/NVIDIA took 1.23

My system is old, I know, but I only edit simple Zoom webinars, no fusion, no grade (1080 h264, src footage info attached).

Is my GPU that old that native is quicker?
Thanks,
Lucy

Any chance you selected Intel instead of Native?

The other thing to check is all the settings matched when you switched from Nvidia to Native.

There are different options for each encoder and I'm not sure how to do a basic straight up apples to apples comparison.

Where is 'Intel'? That's not an option I see.

Render settings were all the same except for Format (Quicktime | MP4) and Encoder (Native | NVIDIA).

Thanks.

native uses the quicksync engine in the intel CPU and every GPU
is less efficient than quicksync with H264/H265

Well damn. That's something I didn't know! Thank you Mark. I shall read up on quicksync...

I really don't think native uses QuickSync, unless that changed recently. Native is software. QuickSync used to be Intel not native. Makes no sense either, as how are you going to select the software encoder then?

I am skeptical of that. Native uses the CPU, but isn't QuickSync a separate choice in the dropdown?

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.
