Adaptation value in Tone Mapping Method

PostThu Jun 17, 2021 7:04 pm

Hi all!

So i am trying to wrap my brain around the role of the Adaptation slider in the CST ofx plugin.

I get it that it is "designed to compensate for large differences in the viewer's state of visual adaptation when viewing a bright image on an HDR display versus seeing that same image on an SDR display".
But how would that be useful for day-to-day use of the CST plugin?
For me it feels like a pivot control, favoring the highlights or shadows.
Have you messed with it?

It almost acts as a pivot to what I am seeing on the scopes.

Also noticed that the Adaptation slider reverses the adjustment depending if you are in DaVinci or Luminance mapping method.

For instance in DaVinci tone mapping increasing the value will lower the highlights, effectively recovering highlight detail that might have been initially clipped.
Exactly the opposite is happening in Luminance Mapping, but this time we are raising the shadows.

Curious of your ways of using it. Thanks!!
