Bug with Image Scaling?

PostFri Jun 18, 2021 9:02 pm

Hi!

I seem to have a bug with image scaling. Until a few weeks / months everything was fine. But then (due to the update to Davinci Resolve 17, or changing settings, or both; I really don't know) my videos are getting unsharp.
I was searching for a solution and I found a semi-solution. The setting "File->Project Settings...->Image Scaling->Image Scaling->Resize filter" is set to "Sharper". When I change it to "Custom" and with "->Method" to "Box", then the video's quality comes near to the original quality. I tried several other options (not all), but "Box" was the best I could find.

My original videos have a resolution of 1920x1080p60 and my timeline is set to exact that. So image scaling is in that case not necessary; but it is done and it reduces quality about the ~half.

My questions are now:

* How do I turn off image scaling (because I hardly ever need it)?
* Is it a bug, that image scaling is used even though input and output resolution are exactly the same?
* Is it a bug, that image scaling from one resolution to exactly the same resolution does reduce the quality that badly?

I tried to add three example images, but the max upload size is 2 MB and the images have each a size from 3 MB to 5 MB. So I can't provide one without changing the size (and changing the rendering result) :-(

Have a nice day!

I leave it on "sharper". If your video clips are HD in an HD timeline no scaling is taking place. Something else is affecting the image sharpness.

As you can see in the images, my image as well as the timeline have the same resolution. No image scaling should take place. But then, changing the resize filter should have no effect; but it does have an effect. So image scaling takes place.

If it should not, then this is a bug.

If the media and the timeline match, then no Input Scaling will occur. I'm thinking the problem lies elsewhere.

Timeline Proxy Mode is off?

Are you using Optimized Media or Proxies at all?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

About that, I already did answer to Charles. Unluckily, my post isn't showing up. Maybe because I'm new to this forum and my posts need to get published by an administrator. Maybe there are no administrators online on weekends?

I don't even know where the option for timeline proxies is. And I don't know what it's for.

No, I don't use optimized media or media proxies. In fact, I don't even know what it's for. So I never even touched it.

Resizing only occurs when you select it or have clips that need resizing to the timeline settings.

Look in the playback menu for optimized media and proxies.
Check timeline proxy mode is off.

also, make sure you are checking on the color page viewer with actual size selected.. if you dont have a reference display with the same res as the timeline.

This is where you find Timeline proxy mode.

As you do not have any knowledge of proxies it would be a good idea to have a look at the training resources provided by Blackmagic for free. Also, don't forget the comprehensive reference manual which you can access from the Help menu in Resolve or the documentation folder which was installed along with Resolve.

Here are my playback settings; all offline. But as you can see in the preview, the green text is still blurry.

I still think it's a bug...

Post a pic of the full screen view of the timeline viewer.

Unfortunately, the image would be too large (only 1 MiB are allowed for uploading images). So I decided to just cut the image in quarters. But even then the images are too big (the original has about 4 MB). So I can't really provide a full screen image. Only small parts of the screen would be possible :-(

Can you send your original image file? I'd be happy to test on my systems.

You could use fromsmash or wetransfer to share it.

I don't know fromsmash or wetransfer (and am very suspicious of services I don't know), so I don't really want to use them. Instead, I uploaded the image to Google Drive; here is the link:

Now that’s funny! Can I use that line in a movie script?

No problems with your sample image here. Did you try it in a brand new project?

No, I didn't. Until right now, at least. In this new project, the image (and video) seems perfect. Thanks for your hint!

Maybe, I should create a new template-project. My current one is a few years old (Resolve ~12). Maybe it just got incompatible with the most recent version (or got corrupted over the years/versions) :D

Yeah. I recently did the same. I'll bet some odd setting came through that has changed over the years. It looks like perhaps an interlaced thing.
