What circumstances lead to exceeding 8GB/10GB VRAM of GPU?

PostMon Jun 21, 2021 4:52 am

Occasionally, people give anecdotes of running up against the VRAM limit of Nvidia GPU's, i.e. the 8GB limit of the 3070 and 10TB limit of the 3080. But those people, when giving the anecdotes, don't often explain what level of video work/Fusion compositions caused the memory to run out.

I'd be interested in hearing details of what types of work led to memory running out. I'm wanting to hear these, so that I can get an indication if 8GB/10GB VRAM will be enough for my work.

The most common example seen is temporal noise reduction, or other effects that look at multiple frames, 4K and beyond. That would routinely tap out the 11GB of my old 1080 Ti. At 8K you will run out of memory if you do basically anything with less than 16GB.

Most of my videos are 4K footage with a lot of 2D, and some 3D, animations in Fusion.

I am of the opinion that the memory issue is a long standing bug in Resolve with nVidia GPU's that will require a fix from BMD to actually solve once and for all. Part of what leads me to that idea is that we have reports of the very same project rendering just fine with an AMD GPU that has less VRAM.

Unfortunately, I've seen no evidence that BMD agrees with me on this.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.
