portable edit suite query

PostTue Jun 22, 2021 3:00 pm

Posted per favore for a fellow filmie who is up against a bit of urgency.

----------
Hey guys, needing advice on a laptop, I'm looking to make a full length 4k doco on lifestyle in a few years mostly on my Hero9 and M2Pro Drone. (I have a lot to learn still, but I have a vision. Would this laptop be overkill or undercutting? I would just get a desktop but I will be travelling. I've just been reading what some editing programs recommend for GPU, Ram, CPU etc.

The capacity of machine is dependant of
- rushes resolution (HD? UHD?)
- project resolution
- number of simultaneous play (multicam?)
- number of effect, color grading etc.
- proxies? optimized medias? action cam and drone clips are the worst for DVR
I can say by experience that you can do it on your portable computer but It can easely touch the limit of heat and capacity. Now I bought a well equiped desktop and I use the laptop only when necessary.
Da Vinci resolve is very demanding of resources! And often, when traveling, I prefer to do a quick editing on FCPX or Premiere, transfering it to DVR when at home.

Basically any laptop money can buy is at most usable with Resolve. There is no such thing as too powerful. Pay attention to thermal throttle and DPC Latency with whatever you chose.

This is simply not true. Whilst high end desktops can obviously far exceed a laptop in power, the latter can be very workable. I am using a HP ZBook 17 G5 workstation fully loaded 64gb ram/Quadro 16GB i7 6 core that is more than just usable for both offline and online up to 4K with both Avid and Resolve Studio, professionally. Laptops have become my platform of choice for remote and onsite usage. From the look of those specs I should think they are more than adequate to the task. However I will concede that thermal throttling could be an issue in non-standard bespoke configurations. The HP, Dell and Lenovo enterprise workstation offerings are built to mil spec for 24/7 intensive use.
