Colour information past 1023?

PostMon Jul 12, 2021 10:59 am

Playing around with footage I notice a lot of the time if I drag the highlights down then there appears to be a bit of information on the scopes being slowly dragged down from 1023 even though before I touched it the scopes make it seem as though it should all be blown out with no information in.

Left a couple of pics to illustrate what I mean but can anyone explain this? is there some information still there, how does it work?

Pics have sent the wrong way but still, you can see on Scopes 1 it looks like everything is blown out but dragging it down it reveals a bit more information in the colours

Filmed on a camera that stores superwhite values maybe? But then it's strange that it still clips below the highest value.

Filming on a GH5 so I'm not sure it has anything like that

What Color Management settings are used?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I played around with them and no difference really. I mean it's not a bug I'm just curious as to how I have information stored up there in the area where I thought information would be lost completely

So it seems to be - Clip Attributes - Video - Data Levels -

And selecting that to fill will show (almost) all of the data in the range, seems like the Default of Resolve is to push it to video standards by the look of it, hopefully there's a way to change this default behaviour rather than clicking each clip manually

The GH5 has a setting for it, they call it Luminance Level and it's different depending on which format/codec you record to.

Resolve takes integer RGB input data and immediately converts it to Floating Point data. When a FP value exceeds 1023 the display simply clips it at 1023. The FP value is not altered in any way. When you drag GAIN down this value modifies the FP value so more of the data are visible--now under 1023. I always look to see what's hidden. Is it reflected white or specular highlights.

We use that regularly with clips out of Sony cameras. Many of them store Superwhite values.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

10 bit superwhite is represented by code values 940-1019, Resolve’s scopes are only a guideline and don’t reflect actual data allocation.

Good Luck

It was Sony DV cameras that taught me about about Superwhite. I teach how to export from 64 to 1023 for streaming or to import into another application.
