I have a GTX 1080 and an i7700k. not the newest gear but stills gets me through most processes. Im new to resolve and im trying to edit an hour long 4k file. Realtime playback just doesnt work, way to choppy, so im trying to create proxy media. my render time for this 18gb hour long 4k file is over an hour and a half. my cpu is at 100% usage. i have the render set to half res and h.264 format. is this normal. plz help

also earlier today i waited the entire 2 hour and the proxy video file size was 600gb. thats gotta be broken right, like somethings wrong with that. plz help

The 1080 struggles with H265 decode performance, but H264 decode is rather quick.

You might just generate 1080p H264 proxies with a small GOP size (such as -g4 in FFMPEG) using the 1080s NVENC engine.

You could do this with FFMPEG or a Wrapper like Shutterencoder. This should be fairly quick to gernate and smooth to edit in Resolve (if you are using studio).

I'm not a fan of using H.264/5 in any part of the production chain. That's a format best suited for final delivery only.

That said, if the original clip is H.264 or H.265, try generating Optimized Media using Cineform at 1/4 resolution.

Cargo cult and FUD.

H264/H265 support all intra just fine and enjoy GPU acceleration in contrast to Cineform, ProRes, or DNx.

That means encode is much faster, file size comparable and editing in Resolve pretty much the same performance.

ProRes still has an edge in timeline scrubbing performance compared to all intra H264, but it's really hair splitting. Supposedly that vanishes if GPU decoding is disabled. Seems the CPU decode pipeline is bit more snappy.

They also support lossless with good compression using GPU acceleration, which non of the fancy edit codecs can do.

I have been repeating the chant in the hope a Dakota will drop me an RTX3090 but “FUD”?

My point exactly. And that edge tends to expand as you add affects and color work.
