Super 8 Footage

PostMon Jul 19, 2021 6:38 am

Hi,
I have some super8 footage that has been digitized at 18fps.
I'm not sure of the best way to work with it, am I best off making an 18fps project/timeline and when delivering convert to preferred fps of 25fps, or just using my usual 25fps project/timeline?

Thanks in advance.
Thanks,
Nick

The framerate of your file is actually 18 f/s? Or is the footage shot at 18 f/s but the digital file is 25 f/s? The latter would be the common scenario for digitized Super 8 video. I have not come across a service that offers a frame by frame scan and then delivers in 18 f/s. What container, what codec is your digital file?

Hi, no it's actually been digitized at 18fps!
Thanks,

I'd use 18 fps footage on a 25fps timeline, edit with nearest interpolation or Standard Fast Optical Flow and switch to Speed Warp Optical Flow for delivery.

Most telecines these days produce frame by frame digital conversions, to prevent interpolation issues, so I would definitely not want to be introducing any of those sort of artifacts to the final format.
Our telecine unit doesn't worry about the source recording speed at all - it simple copies every frame to a digital file perfectly.

You haven't said who you are delivering to, but if it was me, I would deliver the project at 18 frames per second as was meant to be played back and viewed.

Hi,
thanks for all your replies, the client actually wants to post on instagram, so if instagram will accept 18fps, I'll deliver 18fps.
It's always fun to work with something new or should I say old, and learn something new.
Thanks again.
Thanks,
Nick

Unfortunately if it's for Insta, there's a minimum frame rate of 30 frames per second.
If the platform will allow 36 frames / sec, I'd go for that timeline speed and then slow by 50% - perfect!!

I somehow think Insta won't let you deliver at 36, so you'll probably need to place the 18fps footage on a 30fps timeline, edit with Nearest interpolation and switch to Speed Warp Optical Flow for delivery, as per Peter's recommendation.
Please let us know how you went in the end.
