Bringing Small VFX Asset into resolve?

PostThu Jul 22, 2021 5:47 pm

Hi everybody!

I have a Premiere Pro Project that has small animations on top of live footage (Like smoke coming from someones hand)

How do I bring this asset into Resolve? Is there an easy way?

If the composite is already done in Premiere, as far as I know, all you can do is export that from Premiere as a separate file and then drop that into Resolve.

But if by "asset" you mean the smoke itself, if the smoke clip is on a separate layer and has an alpha channel, you can bring just the smoke clip in and it should key on a separate track (as with most editing programs). There are also basic compositing tools available on the Edit page (and the Color page). And you can do more complex compositing on the Fusion page.

i have a feature on the front burner this week with 100's of smoke and fog plates
the workflow for us is:
VFX editor is working in Resolve, has a mirror of my media pool
adds smoke & fog plates +holdback mattes as mattes in the media pool
feeds them through two nodes (matte choker and general purpose color) and onto a layer node
sends me a DRT with only the VFX shots on a seperate track
i drop that timeline into my timeline, append my base grades to the VFX shots
go and tweak

third VFX heavy feature with this workflow now, pretty much painless at my end ;-)
