PostSun Jul 25, 2021 3:54 pm

Anyone running an AMD 6900XT in a 2019 Mac Pro?

I see BareFeats has run some tests.

yes… i run a 6900XT in a 28-Core MacPro(2019) side by side to an Apple Pro VegaIi Duo.
no problems so far. Performance-wise is the single X6900 on-par with the two ProVegas in my system.so it basically doubles the GPU-performance „on paper“.in real world it depends on what you are specifically doing, but you will definitely notice a nice improvement.

Hi Daniel - Just picked up a 6900xt for my 2019 Mac Pro. Perhaps you can give some guidance on the power cables? Do I need to hook all of them up? The installation guide that came with the card does not give this information.

How do you power yours?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply Jerry. Do I need to plug in all power cables into the 6900xt? Two 8 connectors and One 6 connector? Do I use one of the 8x cable that splits into two 8x at the end to plug into the card?

Glad to hear you are able to run two of these cards with no issue. I may look into that in the future.

thx.

You should fill all the connectors on the card. So if it has 2 x 8 & 1 x 6 ports then you need to fill those. My AMD 6900XT only needs 2 x 8, but cards do have varying power needs and ways they arrange that power so if yours needs 2 x 8 + 1 x 6 then make sure they're all connected.

As for whether to use an 8 -> 8 versus an 8 -> 2 x 8, in general (not specific to the Mac Pro which I have no experience of), I prefer to use 8 -> 8 cables rather than split cables, to avoid putting too much load on one cable.

Hey Jerry

Thanks for the pic. Can you re post without the BMD speed test covering up how your cables are attached to the Mac Pro mother board?

Thanks!
