Media Management Copy and Trim doesn't work with H.264

PostWed Jul 28, 2021 12:13 am

In the Davinci Resolve user manual, it states:
In addition, the “trim unused media” options of the Copy or Move operations are now compatible with clips that use codecs employing temporal compression, such as H.264, XAVC, and AVC-Intra, enabling you to eliminate unused media for these formats during media management without recompressing or transcoding.

However, when I actually use this option with H.264 MP4 files, it does NOT keep the same edits that I have made. In the resulting timeline, the clips are all shifted to completely different scenes, and some of the clips even show as offline.

I nearly lost my entire project, had I not been wary and created a backup before attempting this.
If trimming isn't supported for MP4, just say so instead of claiming it works in the manual!

This is Davinci Resolve 17.2.2 Build 4 on fully updated Windows 10.

H.264 is bad for post in a lot of ways. Our workaround is to use "Render in Place" to re-render the file as an easier format like DNxHR or ProRes, and that can be trimmed and media-managed. DNxHR and ProRes generally will playback at speed better than H.264 as well, so that's another reason to use it instead.

It works for me, but not for all codec flavors. Where it works, trimming will always extend to the next I-frame.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Yes folks, as I said, I completely understand why it would be a difficult thing for this to work and why other options would be better. The problem is that they SPECIFICALLY CLAIM in the manual that it should work.

What any of the camera or software makers claim seems always to be negotiable so to speak.

You really have to test before committing to a deliverable project. Wish it weren't so, but that's just the reality.
