Color Picker doesn't match the color

PostWed Jul 28, 2021 4:46 pm

I'm using Resolve 17.2.2 on a iMac Pro with MacOs 10.15.7

Whenever I sample a color for a colored solid it doesn't actually match the color it should.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it an issue with project setting?

EDIT:

Turning on the 10 bit viewer option for Macs in Preferences solved the problem.

Been that way since V11. I gave up trying to fix it.

Simply make a solid color of 128, 128, 128 and eyedropper it.

It changes luminance each time it is sampled.

Could you be more specific?

Preferences >General>System menu. Page 94 of the latest manual.

"Use 10-bit precision in viewers if available: This checkbox only appears on Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) and higher installations of DaVinci Resolve. Turning this checkbox on lets DaVinci Resolve display 10-bit images in the Viewer."

I see the same issue with 10 bit viewer option and also without the 10 bit viewer option.
The colour picker gets the luminance wrong on a simple monochrome colour generator. The colour I set the generator to is sampled incorrectly when applied to another instance of the same colour generator.

Thanks for the screen shot Jack. Unfortunately the problem persists even with that check on.

I use Resolve Studio 17.4.2 on Mac, and face the same issue. The 10-bit switch in the preferences does not help. As Peter Cave noted, even if you copy a solid and use color picker of the new instance to sample the original solid, the color of the new solid gets changed a few shades.

I was facing this issue ever since I started using macOS and I finally found the cause as well as the solution.
The issue is most likely caused by the fact that your (probably external) monitor has a color profile that isn't sRGB.

On macOS, go to System Preferences > Displays, select your display and set the "Colour Profile" to sRGB.
By default, my external monitors were set to a profile that had the same name as the monitor, which lead to mismatched colors when using the color picker/eyedropper, but luckily setting my display to sRGB fixed it.

This issue never happened to me on Windows, but I also checked that on Windows, all my displays were set to sRGB by default as well. It was also weird since I always assumed that color pickers pick colors based on the color of pixel which is hovered, without trying to convert them to the color space of the monitor.

Hopefully this helps.

I faced the same problem today. Working on an Intel based MacBook. I found a workaround doing the color picking on the laptops own monitor. When the source color was picked on my external Eizo monitor, the values were clearly different.

FIXED!!! Wow I've had this problem for so many years and none of the above solutions made a difference.

In Davinci, go to Project Settings > Color Management and change your output colour space to sRGB.

Done.
