A few observations on "Render In Place":
1. Only a few formats will support alpha channels on the "rendered" version, eg DPX with RGBA color
2. On the media page - you need to deselect "show individual frames" to make the "render in place" correctly substitute the rendered version for the original video. Otherwise you just get a tonne of individual frames rendered and placed in the media pool
3. To find this out less painfully, choose sections of video less than second long, and "Render In Place" before committing to a painfully long and lengthy render process that will likely fail for one reason or another.
