Problem with Wrong FPS metadata.

PostMon Aug 02, 2021 3:35 pm

Hey friends, it has some time from my last post, everything going smooth in the video maker over here. :D

But this time I am in need of a great help to understand what went wrong to my footage...

So I was filming with my Sony a7s sending a FullHD signal to my Atomos Ninja Assassin in 60fps and recorded the footage in the Atomos as a Proress 422.

On the Monitor playback everything was good, the footage runs smooth, and the monitor says it is receiving the right FPS.

But when I open the files on PC it says they are recorded at 30fps and I receive some weirds stuttered images:

When I open the footage in a 30 or 24 FPS Timeline inside Davinci the video plays ok, but the "double of frames" (60fps) needed to slow down the footage is lost so the footage gets all choppy... And I need theses slows moments.

I'm pulling my hair out on this, but I'm already bald... ;~~
So I appreciate any help and insights in advance. Thank you friends. :D

Do you get the double-frames only when you view them in the 30fps timeline or do you see them when you view the source footage inside Resolve?

When you put a 60fps clip onto a 30fps timeline, Resolve needs to figure out how to get rid of the extra frames. You can control this in Project Settings --> Master Settings by scrolling down to the "Frame Interpolation" setting at the bottom. If you choose "nearest" then Resolve will simply drop the extra frames, but if you choose "Frame Blend" then it will superimpose two 60fps images to produce each frame on the 30fps timeline. The latter sounds like what you're seeing.

Hey Sean, thank you for your reply.

This are my Frame Interpolation settings.

When I put the the footage in a 30 fps timeline, it works fine, but I lose half of the FPS and can't slow down the high speed scenes (skateboard tricks) because it gets choppy.

When I put the footage into a new project with a 60fps timeline, also works fine, and I can slow down normal, because all the 60 FPS are there.

But when I watch the scenes from the media pool playback before drag it down to the Davinci Pool, i get the double ghost frames.

When I try to watch the scenes into Real Media Player the same thing happens.

So I believe for some bug or wrong configuration the Atomos recorder wrote the wrong metadata to the files. all the 60 frames are there, but it is wrote that are only 30 frames.

Do you know if there is any third part app that can correct this metadata? Or if there is a function inside Davince for that?

Uhm guys. Lucas is shooting interlaced (the 59.94i). Why are we bothering with progressive timelines?
Sorry.

ATT: Lucas: Is your timeline interlaced? Davinci sees the interlacation (Field dominance: Upper field) so it's somewhere in your timeline settings you have done something.

To debug: 1) make a completely new project, pull a single file in, accept the changes, make new timeline.
If it works there, it's a setting issue in your normal project
1.1) Now you have a working baseline and can compare the two projects to find where the problem is.
2) if it does not: Upload a sample file to wetransfer/dropbox/somewhere on the internet, so others can confirm the issue.

59.94i is 29.97 fps.

You never shot 60fps.

Hey guys, I did shoot as interlaced frames and I didn't even know what the heck was that...

Now I founded in the camera where to config this and will never film as interlaced again...

Mads Johansen a new project did fixed the footage, as you said, I was putting the interlaced footage into a older progressive timeline project this is why it was all bugged.

Don't know if I will be able to slow it down but now that I know what went wrong I will spend a few days into this project. Thank you all for your help. :D

Other people have pin point the problem, but I just want to add comething:

Their is a confusion between 29.97i AND 59.94i between some camera and some NLE.

29.97i AND 59.94i is the SAME THING.

29.97p AND 59.94P is NOT the same thing

So like people have said, you have indeed shot in 29.97fps (29.97i or 5994i).

Just so you know, interlaced is not bad for tv... but in general most portable camera are better to shoot in P directly.

Hope that help some people !
