Hardware help for late 2012 27" iMac

PostMon Aug 02, 2021 6:45 pm

I am curious about using a MacMini with M1 chip with my late 2012 iMac for Davinci Resolve.

The editing I am doing is not high-tech - it is mostly training videos taken at 1080p and Zoom meetings. I can run 4k from my camera and usually don't as most of what I am doing will be viewed on monitors.

My late 2012 is i5 with 16GB RAM and have no idea the GPU (but not much I am sure)

I can run Davinci (its a bit like when we had dial-up for those old enough to remember ...lol) and am seeking a solution outside of purchasing a new iMac.

Any suggestions or help for a not so technical person is appreciated.

If that iMac can be used as a display for another computer, the Mac mini M1 might be a good solution.
Some iMacs before the 2017 model could do that.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Thank you Uli,

I will give the MacMini a try. It sounds like it could be very useful over time and that I can use it with other screens if needed,

Just a check, I would be working from the Macmini and then using my 27 inch as a monitor for the mini?

Yes.
Even if the current Mac mini is only an entry-level machine, it's considerably more powerful than your iMac.

Here you see how to use it as a display: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204592
