How do you append with audio files?

PostThu Aug 05, 2021 1:11 am

My process is pretty straight forward. While using the CUT page, I'm looking at an audio file. I select the IN and OUT points that I need, and usually I click "APPEND" on my speed editor keyboard and it appends the clip to the end of my timeline. However, this is not happening.

The Resolve manual (p. 453) suggests I have to select a track to append to by clicking the track header, and that upon doing so the selected track is highlighted. There is no further information what this looks like, but I believe I have a track selected. However, the append function does not append the content to the end of the timeline on the selected track, it adds it to the selected track at the where the last video track ends. Is this normal behavior?

Interestingly, when I delete the second audio track (hoping that 'APPEND' will add clips to the sole remaining audio track), it still does not -- clicking APPEND just automatically creates a new audio track and adds the clip there, right at the point on the timeline where the last video clip ends.

Here's a video to demonstrate / explain it better:

Like I said in the video, this is just as likely to be my own failure rather than a bug because this is complex stuff, so any pointers would be appreciated. :)

Yes, that is normal behaviour for the 'append' function. It will always add after the last media clip in the timeline. If you want to add at a specific place in the timeline use Overwrite or Insert.

"Media clip" being specifically a clip with video? I just want to clarify because the term "media" to me could be video or audio. If it is supposed to append after the last media clip of any kind on the timeline, it is not doing that. If it's supposed to append specifically only after the last video clip, then it is doing that. :geek:

No. Could be either, or both.

Gotcha, thanks. I guess it's a bug then. :?

Update: Append seems to only consider clips on the selected destination tracks, not all tracks.

The video I put in the original post shows it happening. I try to use append to add to the timeline after all existing content and it inserts it after only the last video clip, rather than the last actual clip (which is a wav audio file).

I don't care for the Cut page. I never use it, so I can't speak on it's operation.

It's working as expected on the Edit page, though.

Yeah, I'm still trying out both and am currently leaning towards mostly/entirely using the EDIT page as well. I do like the CUT page's Source Tape though (all clips in a bin combined for faster review), and being able to see the audio waveform in addition to the video when scrubbing through source footage.

Here's what the former looks like, which I prefer - it shows the audio around the current source viewer playhead position:

Strange, maybe you have a different version from me because that's not what I see on my EDIT page.

You're running 17.2.2, same as me.

Looks like you only have one viewer visible? Which means you're only seeing the TImeline viewer; you don't have the Source viewer visible. From your screenshot, you need to click the button highlighted here to display both viewers at once:

Here's a look at it in context, showing left (Source) and right (Timeline) viewers, and highlighting the . . . menu on the left viewer that you need to click to see the menu options.
