17.3 from time to time stops responding-so does 18

PostTue Aug 31, 2021 12:23 pm

Hello,

for a few weeks Resolve 17.3 stops responding in the middle of a project. Clicking on different windows or players the "active" indicator (this small red line on top of the window) reacts and signalizes the change of the active window but everything else does not react anymore. Mostly the disks start working intensively but stop after a while without changing the blockade. The only way out is to stop Resolve by using the task manager.

A simple restart of Resolve brings it back to work for a while. Then it happenes again. Mostely a system-restart is neccessary.

There is nothing else running on this computer (specs in the footer) - just windows 21H1, the Nvidia driver 471.68, Desktop Video 12.1 and Davinci Resolve 17.3. System runs as Dual-Monitor with 2 24" HP Z24n Displays connected via Display-Port.

Here is the logfile: https://www.margha.com/bmd/DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20210831-141526.zip

Any idea what could cause this "unwanted effect"?

Thanks

Josef

Re: 17.3 from time to time stops responding

I'm sorry to have to come back to this issue...

It turns out that DR 17 stops responding while writing comment on a different computer and placing markers in source video. It never happenes if I edit video or audio or colorcorrect or play out:

Our workflow looks like this: We load video from a local drive in the source-player, play a few minutes, write comment on a second computer, play again a few minutes, type again, jump forward and backward, place a marker for later editing, load a second source video, play a few minutes, look for scenes, scrub to the right sound, type comment, play and so on.

Such a session can last a whole working day. That worked in Davinci Resolve for years now. Suddenly it causes problems.

I couldn't figure out how many videos I need to play to cause DR17 to not respond. Some times it works for hours and some time it hangs after a few minutes. As mentioned in my previous post, DR17 switches the red indicator line for active windows in the case it stops playing, but does not react to anything else.

No idea what causes this problem.

To play the videos on a different program is not a solution because I can't place markers there and need to note timecodes... That's bothersome.

Maybe somebody else has the same "unwanted effect"?

Help would be highly appreciated....

Josef

Re: 17.3 from time to time stops responding - also 18 and ab

Hello,

for months I am fighting with this unwanted behaviour of our system. While writing comment in the Edit Page and placing markers there, changing from sourcefile to sourcfile DR18 suddenly stops playing videos. These are standard MOV/H264.

Although the "Active-Window-Indicator" (this red line above the active window) changes according to the mouseclick - nothing else works. I can't open another media-file or work on the Timelines. I cannot change to another page too. It simply doesn't respond anymore.

The only way is to open the Taskmanager, to manually terminate DR and to restart it. Then everything is fine.

This does not occur if I edit video. It happenes only if I open one video after the other to hear or see what's in it to write comment for later editing.

Here is what my two monitors look like after freezing, Taskmanager inclusively:

I have alredy reinstalled Windows and DR on a blank SSD, keep all drivers actual and have (nearly) no other software an this machine - nothing helps.

BMD, Please have a look into this - THANK YOU!

Hello Peter - thank You for Your reply.

Here are the logs: http://www.margha.com/BMD/DR/DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20221201-134414.zip

And here is the drp: http://www.margha.com/BMD/DR/Mühldorf-TV_Stand_030622.drp

Here is a clip (in fact they are all the same and it happens no matter what kind of clip I am working on: 1920x1080 50p +/- 100MBit/s) http://www.margha.com/BMD/DR/P1020093.MOV

Screen recording follows if it happens again.

Hope that helps...

Thank You once again for Your efforts.

Sorry for the delay - had to work on this weeks program.

Here it is (3.2 GB): http://www.margha.com/BMD/DR/JosefPoellmann.NFO

Since I created this file right after turning it on, with only the system running, I'll create another one if the error occurs next time.

Thank You very much! :-)

Yesterday I had no problems all day long. I already thought the problem was Mozilla Firefox which I uninstalled on Monday this week. Now it happened again.

This NFO was created right after the next blocking-event:

http://www.margha.com/BMD/DR/JosefPoellmann_071222_14_36.NFO

Is it possible, that the DesktopVideoHelper causes the Problem which obviously frequently crashes?

Any news from Your side?

Thank You!

Your image relating to DesktopVideoHelper did not come through.

But I do see in the Windows Error Reporting logs an entry for that, which seems coincident with Resolve app hangs.

So definitely could be related to that. Try the current Desktop Video 12.4.1 update and see if that changes anything. If not, try reverting to Desktop Video 12.1 and see if that changes anything.

Hello Dwaine,

here is the link to the image: http://www.margha.com/BMD/DR/DesktopVideoHelper.jpg Was our server responding too slow?

After posting this image yesterday I upgraded to Desktop Video 12.4.1. and 12.4.2 today. Since this was late in the afternoon and today in the early morning, I don't have observations yet. We'll see what happens today.

Since this problem does not occur on our second machine with a second Pro license of DR wich does noth have a DeckLink-Card installed, I suspect that it is indeed related to Desktop Video.

Thanks for the tip of reverting to 12.1 which in case I'll have to download again.

Hi Dwaine,

the latest results are, that VideoDesktopHelper crashes every time when I shut down Davinci Resolve. Therefore I don't think this program to be the reason for the above described problems.

After returning to Desktop Video 12.1 DR didn't block anymore during writing comment.

We'll see how this will go on.

Thanks and Merry Christmas to You all!

Re: [SOLVED] 17.3 from time to time stops responding-so does

PostWed Aug 23, 2023 11:46 am

Since Version 18.5 the initially described problem, that existed since version 17 came out, has finally gone!

No more hanging during writing comment even if I wirte a whole day long and even if the source-files are longer than one hour.

Thank YOU BMD! :)
