Glitch/Stutter on export of Sony FX6 .MXF files only

PostThu Sep 09, 2021 9:22 am

Hi,

DVR version: 17.3.1 build 5 (Studio)
OS Version: OS X Big Sur 11.5.2
CPU: 2.4GHz 8-core i9
RAM: 64GB DDR4
GPU: AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8GB
Type of storage drives: Internal 2019 16" MBP SSD media (project & cache), external Samsung EVO pro SSD (project media).

Project is running 1080p25 timeline, and exports are the same res/fps, attempted in H.264 both .mov and .mp4 and .mov ProRes codecs. Only corrections currently applied in colour tab are a LUT from SLog3>LC709A. No other FX applied.

The project uses a mix of FS7 footage (my regular camera), plus FX6 footage (hired in for this job). Both cameras shooting UHD .MXF files, with the FS7 codec showing as "XAVC High L5.1" and "XAVC Intra 4:2:2 L4.1" (from two different shoots), and FX6 all as "XAVC Intra 4:2:2 L5.1".

Problem is occurring only very occasionally during playback, and consistently on export. It ONLY manifests in the FX6 clips being used, NEVER in the FS7 clips. It is a glitch / stutter / frame skip, where playback displays 3-4frames twice in quick succession before continuing playback. There is no noticeable glitch in audio.

I'm currently exploring workarounds starting with transcoding the relevant source clips into ProRes, but obviously a permanent fix would be hugely desirable. If anyone wants a source file to test replicability then just ask.

Thanks,

jason

Hey Jason
Just for your troubleshooting reference, I'm working on a 1080p25 native project at the moment with around 50% of the a-cam rushes coming from an FX6 (XAVC Intra 4:2:2 L4.1) ... not seeing any issues.
Cheers

Hi Jason,

I had exactly the same problem in DVR17.3.1
So I reverted to DVR 17.3 and the problem was the same.
After I went back to DVR 17.2.2 the problem was gone!

So apparently there is a export problem for Sony FX6 material in DVR17.3 and 17.3.1
I used XAVC Intra 4:2:2 L5.1 on a MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, AMD Radeon Pro 5600M 8 GB
MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

If you guys are willing to share a small problem clip, more people can test. Maybe find something definitive for BMD to look at.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I have the same issue with XAVC Intra 422 footage from the Sony FX9. The playback is super stuttery. Creating proxy media doesn't help because it has the same glitches. Downgrading to 17.2.2 also worked for me, the issue is not there in pre 17.3 versions. I've never had the issue before with any other previuos version of Resolve.

I've been having this exact same issue, however it only appears on some clips, on my macOS machine at work (late 2013 MacPro, AMD FirePro D500 3GB x2) - rendering the exact same project and footage on a Windows PC doesn't stutter.

If I find a clip which has this issue (and that I'm allowed to share here) I'il post a link.

This other post: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=147107
seems to be reporting the same issue, and the OP shared a link to an MXF clip which glitches on render:

I can reproduce that here. Definitely an incompatibility in DR with those clips. But it shows in VLC too.
Even re-wrapping to .mov doesn't help.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Yep same, but then Catalyst Browse is fine with it... I wonder if Resolve and VLC both use the same (apparently buggy) library to read the FX6 footage?

Same here (MacOS 11.6 DVR 17.3.1). But also comparable problems with FS7 material (UHD, 10bit 422, 240Mbit)

Export with Mainconcept Plugin works without glitch/stutter.

Simply to expand the question: I've written a Bug report about the same issue, but in my case with Panasonic AVCIntra 4k4.2.2 files. No problem rendering out with 17.2.2 ever! Then comes 17.3 and then 17.3.1 and you described what happens perfectly. So currently sticking with 17.2.2 which is a problem as others here are using 17.3.1 for the M1 Chip. So I'm thinking it is not the original files, at least not entirely, but something that has been introduced in 17.3? PS the signature says DR Studio 17.3 made out when life was simpler :)

We are aware of the issue. It affects UHD/4K AVC Intra source clips.

It's an issue in 17.3 and 17.3.1. If it's a problem for you, revert to 17.2.2.

It should be addressed in the next release.

Any idea of when the next version will be released? Roll back to 17.2.2 will work with current databases okay?

I found the issue with FS7 footage and popped in FX6 footage and same issue. I've been transcoding to ProRes via EditReady and no issues. Just more steps. Hopefully Resolve update soon!

Yes you can roll back to 17.2.2 with the current database. I had to do that too

Has this been fixed in todays update? There is no mention of it.

I'm yet to test it, but I believe it has: the fix is described as "Addressed out of order frames when decoding certain XAVC clips."

Hello, same problem on Canon C70 .mxf HF-AVC Long Gop files even after the 17.3.2 update. I 'm using a Macbook M1 16Gb. Glitches here and there especially in hard cuts, between clips even in proxies that generated from the camera. Also the glitches are visible after export the final clip. Sooo frustrating that i have to see the entire project twice frame by frame before export and trim the problematic clips. I have to mention that the clips are playing fine. No problem with the camera.

Not sure it's the same issue. If you go back to Resolve 17.2.2, does the issue go away?

Hi. Did anyone try to update to 17.3.2? Reading the issue with the Canon C70 clips makes me doubt if it's really fixed because it sounds very similar to what we where experiencing with the AVC Intra clips.

I have been working with FX9 UHD XAVC-I media creating 422LT proxy files (standard delivery page type) without any issues. I'm using 17.3.2. My render speed is about 70fps on average. Not related but finding the audio sync via TC not entirely consistent.

Hello Dwaine Maggart,

You say that this issue is fixed in DVR 17.3.2 but in the note with DVR 17.4.1 i see that Blackmagic Addressed a decoding issue with Panasonic XAVC clips on Mac. So my question is : Is it safe to make proxies out of xavc UHD on mac with DVR 17.4.2 ?

Thank you in advance

Different issue. The 17.4.1 fix was for Panasonic P2 AVC Intra 100M QuickTime files. Those files only showed audio and no video prior to 17.4.1.
