Resolve 17.3.1 on M1

PostThu Sep 09, 2021 10:57 pm

I've been a Windows user all my life and I just recently converted to the dark side and I wanted to comment on how well M1 works with Resolve 17.3. I have an eight-core Ryzen with a 2070 Super and I would get crashes, out of memory, etc. but yet on my 8GB M1 iMac (stole from the wife for my project!), the exact same timeline has no crashes, no memory issues, it just works. I do not do fancy Fusion stuff...

I am impressed with how Resolve engineers made the M1 sing. Can't wait for the M1X or M2, I'm there!

PS: Yes, I've updated the studio drivers on my 2070 Super... Have 32GB of RAM, etc. Nothing else fails (I play games!) just Resolve.

Curious if you have tried any Fusion comps with your M1 - I have found that a Fusion composite with 4K (UHD) footage is very taxing on my old Windows laptop and I was considering an M1-based MacBook of some sort for on-the-road editing...

Thanks!

Hi Steve... I've not... This is a short film (drama) that doesn't require much in the way of Fusion type stuff. My hope is as I go onto my next project (which will need Fusion), the newer MX Macs will be out.

Hi Michael,

Would it be possible for you to try a sample on your M1 just as an test to see how it behaves at some point so that you have a baseline to compare to the M1X when it comes out?

Much appreciated,

Steve

Steve,

Do you have a short timeline you would like me to test out? Grab from dropbox / iCloud, etc. You can put in exactly what you would like rather than me guessing... Thx.

That would be great, Michael. Thanks for offering. I'm on the road at the moment and unfortunately, without my editing laptop - I'm stuck with an iPad and LumaFusion at the moment - it's pretty good for mobile workflows but nothing near the power of Resolve which is why I'm asking about your experience with the M1.

When I get back I'll try to put something together in an archived project and place it in Dropbox or some other file share service.

Thanks again for offering.

Thats a great idea to have sample project to benchmark, I have 16gb version & just started with Resolve 17.2.2 I would also like to test my M1 with sample you share on 17.3.1

I'd also appreciate that for testing.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

I didn't get a chance to try this out but this is a zip of a project archive (created on my Windows 10 machine). It has a single UHD media file used in two clips on the timeline. One has a relatively simple fusion comp and the other has some base grading and noise reduction. See if you can play these with the render cache disabled.

The one with the title is running at 24 fps on my Mac mini, the one with NR at around 9 fps.

Apologies for the delays... It ran OK, did get choppy on the 2nd clip.. If you can hang out until November, I think Apple is releasing a newer M1X or M2 iMac / Mac Book Pro then?

For heavier projects, and for some file formats, 8-16 GB of RAM is not enough. Personally, I am waiting for a minimum of 32 GB of RAM (hopefully 64) before I get an M Mac.

First, I'd like to express my thanks to all who joined in to give this a test. You folks are awesome!

The results for the M1 are impressive. I may hold out until the M1X assuming that it arrives with the MacBook Pro 16" in November but at least this gives me a really good sense of how capable the current M1 lineup is compared to my older laptop.

Once again, thanks to all -

Some even expect it for the "California Streaming" event. Let's see…

I found that my Mac M1 16GB was generally fine for normal 4K editing and simple Fusion, but when it came to aspects that were heavily reliant on RAM such as more complex Fusion compositions, the Mac M1 would grind to a halt when auto-rendering the complex Fusion compositions.

In macOS Activity Monitor, often the CPU is operating at around 20% to 50% for complex matters, but the 16GB RAM is totally maxed out.

Initially, I assumed the M1 16GB was un-usable for complex Fusion compositions, but I've found Saver Loader nodes have allowed me to work on complex Fusion compositions that were otherwise unworkable on the M1. (Use the Saver node to render the Fusion composition to a folder on the SSD, and then subsequent playback of that Fusion composition uses a Loader node to read the data from that folder. There are tutorials on youtube).

I admit using Saver Loader nodes for each composition is a slow way of working, but it gets the job done, whereas without them the M1 was simply unworkable for complex compositions.

I too am looking forward to the M1X, M2X with 32GB or 64GB RAM.

Hi Michael,

I'm still holding out, lol, but the config you have on order would be the one I'd get as well (with at least the 2TB SSD option).

Cheers
