New system - Low FPS

PostSat Nov 02, 2013 9:01 pm

Hi everyone,

So here is my setup for DaVinci 9:

- p9x79 WS
- i7 3820 3.6Ghz
- 32 Go Ram 1600 Mhz
- Os Win 7 64bit ultimate on SSD 120go
- Media storage on two SSD 250go in RAID 0
- Quadro 600 for GUI (slot 2)
- Two GTX 680 4go for GPU (slot 1&4)
- Intensity Pro (slot 6)
- Nvidia Driver 331.65
- Power supply 1200w

I've plugged a dvi cable to the quadro making it the GUI card, nothing to the GTXs and an HDMI to the intensity pro for monitoring.

Now, only the two GTXs are showing up in davinci, no sign of the Quadro and most annoying i got only 20 fps on C300 footage and also on 5D  ( not even talking about 2K 4:4:4 files etc )

Checking the option "use optimized display for playback" helps but i'm pretty sure my config should perform better without it.

Any thoughts ?

With so many PCIe cards on that motherboard the PCI slots are running at x8 instead of x16. You need the checkbox enabled.

I unplugged one GTX and FPS was dramatic just by playing simple 5D footage.
So I tried a new windows install with a clean Davinci install and the Quadro is now correctly recognized as well as the two GTXs ... Performance are also here and following my expectations . I had Resolve Lite installed before installing the full version, maybe that created the issue ...

- p9x79 WS
- Quadro 600 for GUI (slot 2)
- Two GTX 680 4go for GPU (slot 1&4)
- Intensity Pro (slot 6)

I'm curious— why the GUI in an x8 slot (Slot 2)?

You could get full 16-lanes for the GUI if you installed thusly in a P9X79-WS:
- Quadro 600 for GUI (slot 1) @ 16-lanes
- Two GTX 680 4go for GPU (slot 2&6) @ 8 lanes each
- Intensity Pro (slot 5) @ 4 lanes

See the details at johnpilgrim.net/reference/Asus-P9X79-WS-annotated.jpg

Rewritten by slot #...

Slot1 16-lanes for GUI card. Requires Slot 4 to be empty.
Slot2 GPU card #1. Only 8-lanes, which is suboptimal, but no worse than a P9X79-Pro with 1GUI and 2 GPU cards
Slot3 Likely blocked by double width GPU card in Slot 2.
Slot4 Required to be empty to give 16 lanes to Slot 1.
Slot5 4-lane single width slot for Intensity Pro
Slot6 GPU card #2. Only 8-lanes, which is again suboptimal, but no worse than a P9X79-Pro with 1GUI and 2 GPU cards
