laptop for davinci Resolve RTX or Quadro?

PostTue Sep 14, 2021 8:01 am

Hello,
I have a laptop and I want to change so I can work with davinci resolve.

I'm looking 32GB RAM.
I'm looking for and what's better? Nvidia RTX or Nvidia Quadro?

Thanks.,

Go RTX (if you find one).
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Studio 18.6.6, MacOS 13.6.6, 2017 iMac, 32 GB, Radeon Pro 580
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM and iPhone 15 Pro

Hi.

Resolve do all its Image processing in fp32. Quadros have its advantages in fp64. So for Resolve is there no reason to get a more expensive Quadro.

Normally do I recommend people on the road to look for a medium to large sized Laptop, so it can get rid of the generated heat.

And you can't do the same work on a 8 core Laptop as on a 12 or 16 core Desktop, but for people on the road is the best laptops for Resolve, a powerfull Gamer Laptop with extra Ram and may be an extra MVMe SSD.

Can I ask if you have considered a Desktop? A cheap Desktop is a much better choice for Resolve. Here is a link to one:

The MSI Creator Z16 Gaming Laptop should be interesting below 3,000 $, but it only has 6 GB of VRAM.
So, it'll be fine for HD, but allow only light tasks in UHD.

As Carsten explained, you'd get a very capable desktop for that price.

Using a Legion 5 Pro 3070 here, up until latest version of Resolve Studio, been running great, have installed 32GB RAM and 2x 1TB SSD, close to 100 FPS when exporting 4K DNxHR in 2:1 aspect ratio, just a hair slower then my 3080 desktop (like 10 FPS exporting) :)

thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't thought about Lenovo.

The idea is to have a laptop as a support, the main work I do with a desktop computer mounted by me:

Intel i9 9820X
64GB RAM
GTX1080ti
2 SSD
2 SSD m.2
1 HDD
