Mouse Infestation again

PostMon Sep 20, 2021 7:27 pm

Gotta hardware question and can't of a better group to ask. I use a Mac and with that use the standard Apple three button corded mouse. I go through about one every year or two and work constantly to keep the center button clean and oil free so it doesn't slip. I tried some other brands but my productivity dropped significantly and as a result came back. My last one lasted two years but then the cord developed a rip in the vinyl jacket.

With all that said I could use some advice. I know there's a great deal of talent here. How do you all move your cursor?

Thanks...

Hi Marshall... Catchy title. :D I'm on a PC system and have been using a trackball. I started with the Kensington trackball which I liked then switched to a keyboard + trackball combo because I wanted a tactile feel keyboard with a mouse built-in. But I was so used to a trackball especially when using the color wheels on Resolve. However my keyboard is getting old and I'm thinking of going back to the Kensington trackball again.

I also use the Shuttle Pro V.2 with it.

The only thing that I am holding off is that I'm waiting for the MX1 Silicon announcements since I have to make some decisions about where to go with my next workstation. That's because I don't have any experience if trackballs will work on Apple computers.

I think you'll get more input if this was posted under Post Production.

Since 2010, on all systems I've used a very simple HP wired 3-button USB optical mouse, the X500. $12 from Amazon and most other online dealers. They generally last about 2 years for me. They break, I throw 'em out and grab another one. I think I have six in the drawer, which may be a lifetime supply for me.

I'm using an angled, nearly upright mouse, which takes stress off the wrist.
Made for PC and works flawlessly on the Mac.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

I use the Apple Magic Trackpad 2. A great piece of hardware, especially when paired with software like Better Touch Tool which allows complete customisation of its gestures.

With this I use a variety of different swipes (two finger, three finger, four finger), taps, "force clicks" (pressing down especially hard) and other gestures to control the OS and various apps.

For example:
- Two finger swipe left/right = back/forward in browser and other apps
- Three finger swipe up = Mission Control (reveal all windows on all monitors)
- Three finger swipe left/right = go left/right between Spaces (desktops) and full screen apps
- Four finger swipe up/down = Page Up/Page Down
- Force click bottom right = middle mouse button (for the rare occasions when I need it)
- Three finger double tap in Firefox/Chrome = Control-Tab = go to next tab
- Three finger force click in Firefox/Chrome = Shift + Middle Mouse Button = Open link in new tab

Better Touch Tool also supports more complex gestures, for example these I've configured for Resolve only:
Image

TipTap Left/Right means I put two fingers on the pad, then tap a third finger to the left or right of them. TipSwipe Left Finger Up/Down means I put two fingers on the pad, then swipe a third finger up or down to the left of them.

Gestures like these comes in handy especially when I'm using the Speed Editor with my other hand, allowing me to jump to the start or end of a timeline or back/forward between clips without having to take my left hand off the Speed Editor or the right hand off the trackpad.

Better Touch Tool supports gestures on the Magic Mouse too, for those who use that. Not nearly as many as with the trackpad, but it still allows a lot more customisation than the OS does.

Curious Ellory, does the ShuttlePRO come with presets for Resolve?

There is a Resolve profile but only an older version - 14 or earlier if I remember. There is also a Fusion 9 profile.
I used the old ones as a basis for 16/17
