Resolve 17.1.3/Mac Mini M1 freezes while rendering

PostTue Sep 21, 2021 10:03 pm

Hello everyone!

I have been using resolve for around 5 years now and decided to move to Mac M1, after my 7 year old desktop's GPU stopped being supported by DaVinci. I have moved an old project from an older version of Resolve and whenever I try to render it hangs at the same spot.

Same project renders just fine on my 2015 MB Pro takes forever to do so, but it completes without any issues.

Also, by "Freezes", I mean that after my render hangs, I am able to move back to "Edit" from "Deliver", access menus etc, however the playhead is frozen when I try to play my timeline. Many times I had to Force Quit, as it would stay active after I chose to quit the app.

Any ideas/tips welcome and thank you in advance!

Tell us more about your project: source material, timeline resolution and effects used.
Please keep in mind that the current apple M1 machines are entry-level and not very capable in the graphics section.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Thank you for the reply.

Very simple 3 minute timeline, no fairlight no nothing. Just some blending effects on 4-5 video tracks.
This renders on my 7 year old windows desktop in a few minutes, while on the M1 it gives the aforementioned problem. Also when I quit the application it just stays on the dock. I have to force quit to get it to quit.

Supposedly version 17.3.1 is 3x faster for M1 processors, perhaps something might have gone wrong in this release?

This is from just now - I am trying to modify my subtitle font size, and after doing it couple of times it partially stops responding. So perhaps not just the export is the problem:

Are these simple titles from DR or Fusion titles? If the former, that's definitely wrong.
I'd try a fresh install of the system and DR in that case.

I am dealing with the same issue on my M1 max and its so annoying. and its with the smallest of tasks. MY project isn't even that big. I had to deactivate some denoise nodes just to get through a timeline. I have a hackintosh at my studio thats still running flawless. and this $5000 laptop is acting like a fool!

The M1 Max is very different from the M1 mini the TO is having problems with.
If the M1 Max is giving you that much trouble, I'd bring it back to Apple immediately. My M1 Pro works much better under Resolve than my former Intel machine.

I have been seeing this same problem, and have been for 17.1.3, 17.1.4, and now 17.1.5.
Getting the exact symptoms as seen in the video above, with the Resolve Application refusing to play back any timeline content, and the CPU going bananas (with zero GPU Activity).

Resolve Studio
CPU: M1 Max
RAM: 32GB
Project: Local and Remote Database stored (Happens in both cases).
Network: 10GB

Most interestingly, looking at the process dump, there are MANY (Hundreds?) of threads all in __psynch_cvwait

1345 Thread_498901
+ 1345 thread_start (in libsystem_pthread.dylib) + 8 [0x1af3e908c]
+ 1345 _pthread_start (in libsystem_pthread.dylib) + 148 [0x1af3ee26c]
+ 1345 ??? (in Resolve) load address 0x100ce8000 + 0xe85f0 [0x100dd05f0]
+ 1345 ??? (in Resolve) load address 0x100ce8000 + 0x144cfe4 [0x102134fe4]
+ 1345 ??? (in Resolve) load address 0x100ce8000 + 0x19ee3a0 [0x1026d63a0]
+ 1345 _pthread_cond_wait (in libsystem_pthread.dylib) + 1236 [0x1af3ee83c]
+ 1345 __psynch_cvwait (in libsystem_kernel.dylib) + 8 [0x1af3b4290]

The software is unusable.

I'd recommend posting the crash logs and the .drp for BM to look into your problem.
The software is definitely usable here for a 4:30 hours, 3 camera doc project with lots of NR that renders much faster than on my former Intel iMac.

I'm running 17.4.6 on a Macbook Pro M1 and I used to get the same freeze while rendering randomly and quite often.

I noticed that this happens only when I render MP4 H264 right after editing timelines that contain any sort of GPU transition, effect, or Fusion comps / adjustment clips.

My weird workaround is to first render Apple ProRes (422 or 4444) of the timelines and then the H264 versions. In this way, it never froze (so far).

Maybe there's something that collides between GPU effects and the H264 encoder on the M1?

Demanding effects plus encoding to a GOP codec at the same time can crash PCs too.
I'd render into ProRes HQ 422 and then do the encoding with Handbrake. This way you have a master file for future codecs and you can even render in the background.

Hey Uli,

Thanks for the reply!

Handbrake is usually in the pipeline, especially when we have to deliver at multiple bitrates on short notice, but re-rendering a master feels like a betrayal of one's principles especially when you have access to the raw material. :D

Cheers

If you have short clips you can even upload ProRes to YT and it'll look better than re-encoded H.264/265.
