combine multi source audio files to export interleaved audio

PostFri Sep 24, 2021 12:38 pm

One of the main features listed in the 17.3.1 release notes is the ability to 'combine multi source audio files to export interleaved audio'.

I was hoping this meant we can finally create an empty 5.1 audio track and populate it with six separate mono audio files, but I haven't been able to accomplish this.

Has anyone figured this out yet?

I just tried this and got it working with the following method. No idea if this involved the 17.3.1 change, as I'd never tried it in earlier versions:

1. Create a Timeline containing 6 x mono tracks
Image

2. Go to the Fairlight page

3. Fairlight menu -> Link Group

4. Select the six tracks, then Link as: 5.1 (or 5.1 Film)
Image

5. Deliver page, Single clip mode, Audio, Output Track 1: Timeline Track, choose Track 1, and see it shows "5.1" next to it:

Render that and drag the resulting file back into Resolve. It has 6 channels and is recognised as 5.1:

Nice!

My workaround is creating a 5.1 track, then 'Convert to Linked Group' and drag the mono clips into it, and then it behaves pretty much like a normal 5.1 track.

It would have been nice and a lot less cluttered if you could just drag'em into a native 5.1 track though.

Ahh OK, I misunderstood and thought you wanted to actually export a file, like the change log was referring to.

Yeah if you just want a 5.1 track in Resolve, Convert To Linked Group on a 5.1 track - or the Link Group method I used here - is the way to do it.

Look a export in the fairlight timeline right click.
See the clips or range on the timeline first

Oh yeah, cool. So if you choose "Interleaved - Single File":

You can export this:

Into this:

Thanks Peter, this is a great feature!

Nonetheless I would still like the option to create a multi channel master clip from a selection of mono audio files, and 'populate' a multi channel track with mono files of my own choosing.

This would frequently save me some time and help make projects less cluttered and less error prone.
