Render "pauses" and never resumes (possibly

PostMon Sep 27, 2021 6:03 am

Hello,
I'm having some issues I'm personally having trouble resolving and would love some tips/tricks and support. Thanks in advance.

The issue:
When starting a render on the delivery page it renders for a bit, and then seems to "pause" without resuming. I say "pause" because GPU and CPU usage drops to 0% but memory usage stays intact. No frames are rendered but the UI itself remains responsive. I can open menus (although everything is greyed out, as if I'm rendering). However, when pressing the "Stop" button, nothing happens. It does although never crash, I am able to press the exit button and it warns that a render is in progress, and if I press "exit anyway" it asks if I want to save the file and then exists as it should.

The issue is not consistent. I have managed to complete a full render of this project twice during the weekend, and I'm not sure exactly what I did to make that work since I constantly tried to do little changes to make it work (yes, I should document my troubleshooting better).
When it stops working, it also stops working at different places, sometimes straight away, but mostly between 30% and 50% completion.
This is a new issue, for this project. I have successfully rendered other projects that are x5 times longer that had 4K content in it. This is only 1080p and 2 minutes in length. Also, had no issue with editing it and previewing it.

Troubleshooting things I've tried (most of them because of other forum posts I've found):
  • Use another GPU: I'm using a RX590 locally, but I did try spinning up an Azure VM with a NVIDIA Tesla M60. Same issue when I try to render with CUDA in Azure, but every other frame a -59 error if I try rendering with OpenCL on Azure.
  • With and without "optimized media": No difference I could see (this means both having generated and having checked "Use optimized media" during render).
  • With and without "render cache": No difference I could see (this means both having generated and having checked "Use render cached images" during render).
  • Render in a different output format: I have tried to render using: YouTube 1080p preset; Custom QuickTime DNxHD; Custom mp4 .h264. No difference what I could see.
  • Try to render only the part that most often make it stop: I took and rendered only the timeline where it usually stops. I could render it in its entirety.
  • Limit render speed: Have tried 5, 10 and 50 fps, no difference, stops in the same place "ish".
  • Turn off "stop on dropped frame": No difference as far as I can tell.

From looking at the logs, it seems as if `There is no current clip, SetCurrentFrame failed.` is the message I get when it fails. I've tried searching for it but not really found something that relates to well (or with tips that I haven't tried already).

In the logs attached I did this:
06:40 -> Start Render
07:13 -> Press "stop" in the UI
07:24 -> Close resolve
07:33 -> Open resolve, generate logs

This time, it seemed to have stopped almost immediately.
Here's a small snapshot:

(the files I attached seems to be what others have asked for in other forum posts, please let me know if there's something else I should upload and I'll try to do so asap)

I'd be super glad about any tips or ideas. Maybe there's something I've already tried that I should just try in combination with something else?
Oh and, I heard about people saying that some issues is solved by "copying the entire thing", could someone link to some tutorial (preferably text one) that shows how that is done so I could try it?

Thanks for reading this long post. Hope you have a great day.

Update:
It seems as if the problem has something to do with Fusion Compositions using a specific font.
I have now disabled all Fusion Compositions that use that specific font and managed to render it all. Will do some more digging later today.

Confirm you don't have Playback -> Timeline Proxy Mode set to Half or Quarter. Make sure it's set to None or most/all Fusion compositions will freeze Deliver and never render.

Thanks for the tip.
I can confirm that it was already set to off though, but that's good to know for the future.

I've now managed to render this project and there were two things that helped me produce a result I'm happy with:

  1. Render in place on fusion compositions helped me avoid the "infinite paus" during render
  2. I had a main timeline where I had multiple "sub-timelines", this didn't seem to be the smartest thing, and led to a bunch of strange audio glitches and similar when playing the final render. When I used the "decompose in place" on those timelines the final audio came out much better.
