Audio issues clicks and artifacts, no fix yet?

PostTue Oct 05, 2021 8:50 pm

Hi,

No matter what I do, I change playback engine to system internal audio card, or if I use my apollo usb I/o interface or I also have a Focusrite 2i2. Audio playback in Davinic is horrible, clicks and artifacts all the time. Like when a bad conversion sample rate or bit depth was made. I tried everything WAV, AIFF, all sample rates and bit depth nothing works. I think there is a huge problem in Davinci's audio engine.
Editing like this is impossible.

Davinci studio 17.3.1 build 5
Windows 10 pro
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970x 32 core 3.70ghz
256 GB ram
gpu 3x 3090 Nvidia
Audio options: REALTEK PC audio or Universal Audio Twin USB or Scarlett 2i2 USB. all have same issues

By the way, it's only a playback problem.
when exporting the audio is fine.

so it has to be something on how Davinci is playback the audio it's sounds like a conversion of bit depth or sample rate conversion problem.

Are you overclocking the CPU?

Did you try increasing you Preferences > Video and Audio I/O > Audio > Playback processing buffer size? That might bring some relief.
Let's have a return to the glory days, when press releases for new versions included text like "...with over 300 new features and improvements that professional editors and colorists have asked for."

Following,

I have the EXACT same problem since I came to Davinci in January. Nothing works, different interface, audio buffer size in davinci, in my system preferences, NOTHING. I reached out to this forum twice with no awnsers as of yet. And people my sample rates are fine, all my audio is fine, in Premiere Pro, in Ableton Live, in Pro Tools. ONLY in Davinci, I'm a music studio owner and have a lot of experience in the audio world, trust me, this problem lies somewhere in Davinci Resolve, I will honestly send a freaking crate full of beer around the globe for the person who 'Resolves' this issue.

The very same problem I had with my 2i2. Worked fine for some minutes and then started making digital noise. But I do not think the root of my problem was with Resolve. It also started happening on other sources, like playing radio on my browser. And it was hopeless on Skype. My USB headphones always worked. My solution was to buy another USB sound device from U-Phoria. Everything has been fine after that, not a single sound problem. My bet is on the Focusrite USB drivers being the problem.

This problem has been reported with Focusrite interfaces on the Pro Tools forum, and there are known problems with the stability of Focusrite drivers.
One thing to try. When using the Focusrite with it's ASIO driver make sure that in the Control Panel/Sound/Playback menu in Windows, any entries for the interface are not selected to be used for Windows audio.

YOU SIR are a legend! Even though the problem is'nt completely gone, it has drastically reduced the amount of crackling that I hear, by about 80 to 90%. I also tried to play with the 16 bit and 24 bit depth, but this doesnt seem to make a difference. However, ONE tiny thing still happens now. When I use multicam clips with clips from different camera's somehow it still does the same crackling thing whenever I have SONY A7III Footage in that specific multicam clip selected. So, mixed audio from DAW, but when I choose a GH5 angle, no problem, I switch to a Sony angle, same old problem.. Any idea how this could be? Since the audio stays exactly the same, only the chosen videolayer is changed.

Anyway, MASSIVE thanks already! Now I'm gonna try to re-enable Nvidia hardware encoding, since this only made the problem worse in the past. Fingers crossed!

As I suspected, a clocking issue with Windows audio and the Focurite interfering with each other. As to the Sony footage it could be an issue with framerate. To test, if you put some of the Sony footage into a new project do you get the crackling?

If you want to do some audio work you really can't have Windows (or Mac) using your device.
For reliable work device should be in exclusive mode assigned to your working app.

Also a focusrite user here. In resolve i set it to
I/O engine - ASIO
Device - Focusrite ASIO

Still clicks, pops, etc.. No matter what record/playback buffer size i set it to. Both in the Focusrite's 'own' menu as in resolve. The audio in windows is set to the focusrite as well.

Have you tried removing Focusrite from windows sound?

Still no luck..

And it makes me lose audio outside of resolve.

Guess i'll just keep doing this in other applications. The struggle is real.

I'm not sure if this is the same issue but this is what I am finding.

I'm using a Steinberg UR28M with Asio drivers. In Resolve I am selecting the ASIO in/out engine and then Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO as the device. I am on a Windows 10 PC.

When on the EDIT page all sounds fine. No issues that I can tell at all, and I am able to play my timeline in 5.1. However, when I switch over to Fairlight I get unlistenable distortion. An interesting aspect to it is that this distortion then happens all across windows eg youtube through IE.

if I then simply click back onto the EDIT page then all is okay. Why could this be happening and only when on the Fairlight page?

If you have dedicated audio device then you should make sure it’s not OS default device. As I said - you will never have reliable system if your device is used for ‘OS sounds’.

I have stopped the device from being used by windows and it hasn't helped. This is the kind of sound that the Fairlight page is playing. It's fine on the edit page.

I should also add that before Resolve supported Asio I was able to use my device on the fairlight page using Voicemeeter.

Well, no one said there is no issue in Resolve. ASIO is new fundamental feature, so bugs are expected.

It's not the framerate unfortunately, everything shot at 25p in a 25p timeline. Also it only happens in multicam clips, and only with Sony A7III footage. I'm starting to think it has something to do with the decoding of the codec.

Are you at the most recent version? There were some fixes for Sony codecs.
