How to make smooth start and stop of pan on still image

PostSun Oct 10, 2021 11:41 am

I have a poster (as a .tiff) where I zoomed in so it fills the width of the video. I start on one part of that poster, and later pan down to another part, and remain there a little before fading to another clip.

Using Transform and keyframes, the movement is done at a constant speed, so the start and end of the pan are not smooth.

Is there a way to "ease in" and "ease out" that pan to have a smooth movement?

Only ways I know to do this in DR is with Dynamic Zoom but only if you have 1 beginning and 1 ending point.

The other option is in Fusion.

The Edit page in DR has never had working ease in or ease out for all x and y axis.

It turns out that it's possible in the color page.

Here is how to do it:

- In the color page, use "Input Sizing" and set dynamic keyframes for the start and end of the pan.
- Select a keyframe, and then right-click on it. The menu then has "Change Dynamic Attributes..." which brings up a window named "Dissolve Type".
- Despite the misleading name, the "Dissolve" curves which can be set there let one smooth out the start and end of the pan.

Ease in and out of the in the edit page with transform zoom parameter works for me in v17.2.2.

Can you post a short video showing the smooth start or end of a pan with a still image? I find that ease in/out is better than nothing, but still not very good. The stops especially are abrupt.

You can do it in Resolve but it's very crude. You'll have a fantastic degree of control in Fusion for work like this. Just add the Transform node and animate the size of X/Y controls in the graph editor.
