simpler software

PostThu Oct 14, 2021 2:53 pm

I'm setting up with the Studio Camera, and using a hyperdeck mini recorder. So far no problem, but the "davinci resolve 16" software is, at least for me, impossible to figure out how to use. I've read the manual, also tried a couple of youtube tutorials: it's way way too hard to figure out. I can get the video onto it, but from there it's just a jumble of nonsense. So, my question to the forum: what would be a simple to use ( i mean very simple) software to make basic edits, color correction, to my video?

Moved to Resolve forum

Have you tried v17, and in particular the cut page where you can make simple edits and export without needed to go to the other pages?

Sorry, but truthfully, if you say the manual for Davinci Resolve is just a "jumble of nonsense" is not an accurate statement. Far from it. Davinci Resolve is not an app on your phone designed for non-professional use.

I's suggest recording in ProRes, getting the cheapest Mac and use iMovie.
This is not meant to be ironical, it doesn't get simpler than that.

If you don't like the idea, get the video tutorial by Rippletraining for the Cut page. It's about as simple.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Hitfilm could also be one option. I haven’t tried it myself but it seems to be pretty easy to grasp. Express version should be free, but not sure what the exact limitaions are compared to Pro.

If your video is only for the internet, the free version of Lightworks is another option.

I don't think Lightworks and HitFilm are easier to use than Resolve's cut page (maybe slightly - but maybe that's through the eyes of someone who is also familiar with Media Composer and Premiere so I don't really find Resolve hard to use, just different in some ways).

If the OP would like to learn Resolve for editing, I highly recommend tutorials from Ripple Training. They have excellent tutorials for core training, color grading and working with Fairlight. They aren't free but they are well thought out and executed and come with project media so you can follow along.

You may need a simple NLE, but Resolve is extremely easy to use as far as professional finishing applications go. That's why I like it so much.

For sure that is. But BM has pretty good training material for free to get you started.

Wow, tape? Really? I used videotape for 20+ years, but I don't think I've touched it since maybe 2008 or so.

One thing you can try are the free textbooks on Blackmagic's Training site, which are really good, start with the basics, and have lessons you can follow along with. They're intended for a classroom, but you can also do it all by yourself. The Editor's Guide to Resolve 17 is a good place to start:

I'm a newbie ( now one month with Resolve 17 ), coming from Edius, I followed the instructions from the lessons provided by Davinci (lots and lots of pages ! ) , and now I'm making 3D scenes in Fusion witch I didn't know anything of !
And my native language isn't English !
So take step by step the lessons and You will get there !

You can also apply what you're used to in tape to timelines. Just without the preroll, but the rest of the paradigm still applies. Set in/out points and insert/overwrite - even the nomenclature is the same.

The Cut page might feel most familiar.
