I'm showing a video based around a series of still photographs that that will be shown in a vertically oriented TV screen at a gallery. The timeline is 1920hx1080v with the vertically oriented images saved and imported with a 90 degree counter clockwise rotation. I've done this to avoid any resizing to maintain max resolution. There's a rough audio track backing the photographs and I want to create a subtitle track that will run along the bottom of the TV screen (ie. also rotated 90 degrees ccw to match the image) but, despite some research, haven't been able to find out how to do this (in fact some threads on this forum and others suggest it is not possible other than by using TEXT+ titles).

I have also created a version if the video with a 1080hx1920v oriented timeline but this shows on the (horizontally oriented) TV as a vertical video with black bars at the side (like a vertical video shot on a mobile phone). I don't want that - I need the video to show edge to edge on a vertical TV.

I've looked at a similar post (forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=93441) but this centres on a problem with 4K and hasn't really helped me (as far as I understand anyway).

Can anyone suggest a way I can achieve my objective?

I'm using DaVinci Resolve 17.3.2 on a Windows 10 machine.

I'm refreshing this request in the hope I can get some tips to deal with my issue. In short, I have two things to sort out:
- First, is there anyway I can get subtitles on a 1920x1080 video that will be shown on a vertically oriented TV (the video has images lying on their side on a horizontal TV, but they are full-screen when the TV is placed vertically).
- Second, if part of the answer is that I should be building a 1080x1920 video in the first place, is there a way of ensuring the TV will show it as a full-screen image on a vertically oriented TV - that is, that the TV will NOT show the video with blank bars on either side.
To be clear, I need this to work on a TV, not on a mobile device.
I'd be grateful for any advice or even if anyone can point me in the direction of some tips.

I would try setting up a Timeline with your images on their side, then add the Subtitle track to establish the timing of the Subtitles. When you have that all setup, remove the image track and replace it with an Adjustment Clip and switch to the Fusion page and add a Background node with the Alpha set to zero, this will give a transparent background behind the subtitles. Export this in a format that supports alpha. Create a new Timeline then add your footage on Track 1 then this new file you exported on the track above. You can then rotate the subtitles to the left side and should still have the timing of the original but should work in the way you described your setup.

Thanks Eric. I tried something similar by rendering the subtitle track and then placing it back in the original video as a new video track, rotating it and setting the composite mode to Add. Yours seems like a more elegant and robust solution. I'll give it a try.
