Is It Safe To Nuke Cache Clips Folder (Have Not Done Yet)...

PostTue Oct 19, 2021 6:37 am

The subject line basically says it all. I have not done this yet but want to use a permanently connected external TB3 drive enclosure (with an SSD drive RAID 1 setup) for CacheClips and asked a week or two ago here, so I know that the files will need to be re-generated once I setup the new path in Media Storage of Preferences.

I'm not out of native internal Mac hard drive storage tonight, but....the CacheClips folder is filling up, and even though I know how to identify which project is in those strangely named folders (via the text file), fact is I am going to need to clear up the space at some point.

If I drag that to the trash and hit delete is it safe to do so? Or do I need to go into every project unto itself and "Delete Render Cache --> ALL"?

Definitely wanted to ask here before I do this either way

It's fine to delete the folder directly on disk. Resolve will detect that it's gone as you open each project.

If you're updating the CacheClip location, remember that Media Storage is only a default for new projects. The actual location of CacheClip is stored on a per-project basis in Project Settings. So it also needs to be configured there for each existing project.

Thank you!! Also, thank you a ton for helping diagnosis and solve that other issue I was dealing with a week ago. I really do appreciate all of the kindness. I'm glad you mentioned updating the per-project basis in Project Settings. I had not thought of that so you helped me in advance,

Resolve cache management is a joke. And there is no method in Resolve to delete render in place files.

So basically the only way to deal with it is the delete the cache folder after you finish a project.

In absolute or as comparison to something else?
Do you have any suggestion in how to improve it?

Spoken as a humble learner who is not an expert, can't you just right click the Render In Place file in the Media Pool, select "Reveal In Finder," and trash it? That's been working for me.

My Render In Place files are stored in the folder designated at the top of Media Storage (under the System tab) in Preferences. CacheClips are in the same location but it's a separate folder, so at least in my case, emptying the cache folder would not empty the Render In Place files anyhow. They are under /movies and cache files are specifically within the CacheClip folder within /movies

What we generally do is manually check our Cache/Gallery SSD drive every so often, and if it's getting somewhat stuffed, I'll go in and delete the stuff that's more than six months old, on the theory that there's little or no chance I'm going to need it. I'm on a project now that's using a lot of Cache files because we're using Neat Video on all of it. It's not a problem because it's just HD, but it is a concern and we're trying to stay on top of it.

one way to improve cache, isto have the main folder names COPY the database and project, if you look you have:

Code: Select all
D:\CacheClip\db5dbb2d-8309-40dd-910f-c5d599e844d1

inside there is a text file that has:
Code: Select all
Database Name: aaa_test_v16127.0.0.1
User Name: guest
Project Name: 19_log_test

why not call the folder:
Code: Select all
D:\CacheClip\aaa_test_v16127.0.0.1\19_log_test\

in that way it is CLEAR what we are trying to delete

Absolutely! The GUID names of folders is really annoying.

Even if the folders must have unique names, there's no reason it couldn't be called:
Code: Select all
CacheClip\<project name>-<unique identifier>\<timeline name>-<unique identifier>\<clip name>-<unique identifier>
And so on.

And even better, a proper Cache Management UI in Resolve, which shows a tree structure listing every project (in current DB), and for that project cache stats - disk space used etc - with the ability to expand each project and see a list of cached timelines and clips. With a "Clear Cache" button against each project, and each timeline, and each clip.

Resolve already knows this information, it'd just be a question of making it visible in a UI.
