Blade Doesn't Cut Across All Tracks

PostThu Oct 21, 2021 3:32 am

I've noticed in Resolve 17, the Blade Tool no longer cuts all tracks at once. I would like to know if there's a setting I can change to allow that. I know I can just use Ctrl+B, but I prefer using my mouse. Any suggestions?

Hi

Page 678 in the manual summarises the multiple ways of splitting/joining clips.

The behavior of the razor tool (default hotkey B) and the blade command (default hotkey Cmd-\) have been unchanged for a few years now.

I have the same problem; some setting definitely got changed. My manual only goes to page 410. Guess I'll find the next one :)

You probably checked the 18.5 manual.

No 18.5 manual of which I'm aware (yet).

I occasionally notice the blade hasn't cut all tracks but I've been able to put that down to me having selected only some. My weekly Sunday edit session usually involves two camera tracks (video and audio), plus a separate audio only track and a sixth track for captions and slides that get overlaid in places. The five audio and video tracks, once aligned are linked, so cuts usually go across them all. However, I also need to select sections of the video tracks for things like a zoom or pan and, if I forget to then unselect it, the next cut starts to throw out the audio sync - a few undos to back out and do it properly)...

Every track has "destination" and "auto select" toggles, if no clips are selected, and the cut tool still doesn't cut through all tracks, then an "auto select" on a certain track must be toggled off. That, or a track is locked.

Hmm, I confirmed auto select is enabled for both tracks, neither track locked, clips are linked...still cutting only one track. Even if I manually select both tracks, it still only cuts one...

I found the latest (full) manual, Oct 2022 revision. Search for solution now re-engaged...

Have you tried making sure no tracks are selected. Place cursor and use razor tool. My approach is to make sure no tracks are selected and then use "split" on the Speed Editor .

I just re-read your initial post and opened Resolve to try some things out myself. Using the mouse while in Blade mode, like you like doing, is a localized tool. It only will cut through where you click. Ctrl-B or Ctrl-\, with nothing selected, will cut through all tracks. Use the mouse to guide the cursor, and your left hand keep it on your keyboard, and you can work fast.

I think you're right Bryan, I think I'm imagining that I was previously using the blade tool with the mouse to cut across multiple tracks and only ctrl-b was actually doing that. Going "back" to ctrl-b will work, and yes, speed is absolutely what I'm focused on improving! So much to learn, thank you.

I will investigate this approach as well, thank you. I'm on a mission to build skill with this tool. :D

I take it back again; I created a new project, linked an audio and video clip, and without even thinking about it turned on the blade tool and viola - "previews" a cut across both clips, and performs a cut across both clips. A project-specific something unquestionably changed on the previous project, and that means I still don't know what LOL.

I figured this out and will post for the benefit of others. A right click and linking of the tracks is apparently different than using the chain link icon on the timeline bar. If linking via the right click method alone, the blade tool will not cut across both tracks. With the chain link icon enabled, the function does cut across both tracks.

I believe this is by design.
