Position curves still not working in v17.4

PostFri Oct 22, 2021 8:05 am

I was so excited when I saw "Improved ease in and out functionality for position curves in the timeline" that I straightaway jumped to my computer to check if that horrible bug in the Edit page was finally fixed. But no. The displacement bug still persists in DaVinci Resolve 17.4.

Once again, for the dev team, this functionality works brilliantly in the Fusion page. You just have to copy and paste the code into ease-in/out keyframes in the Edit page and you will make thousands and thousands of users happier. :)

It's still always linear?

Alvaro

Can you describe the scenario in more detail?
I observe the following behavior off a simple test:
• I can apply separate keyframes and separate in, out or in-out smoothening to each keyframe for position X and Y timeline curves.
• I can manipulate the path smoothness and acceleration smoothness in the viewer and see them reflect in the timeline curves.

Yeah it seems to work OK for me.

I still strongly agree with this, though. The Edit page keyframing box is so small and awkward compared to the Spline Editor. At the very least there should be an option to pop it out into a floating window so it can be stretched vertically.

This is so much easier to work with:

Anyway, easing does now seem to work, so that's a step forward at least.

I will try to describe it:

1. Place a keyframe in a clip in both Zoom and Position parameters (the default values are ok)
2. Shift + right arrow to move one second forward and change values of these parameters at the same time. DVR will automatically add two new keyframes in both parameters. So far so good
3. Right click on these new keyframes and change Linear to Ease In. Your will see there's no coordination in the movement

Now let's see in Fusion page:

1. Create an adjustment clip or just send the clip to Fusion page
2. Add a Transformation node and add the same keyframes, changing Center and Size parameters in this case from one second (or frame) to another
3. Open the Spline pane, select the parameters to show, CTRL + A to select them all and F button to automatically add ease-in to all keyframes. You will now see how both size and center keyframes are perfectly aligned

I can post a video later if necessary, when I have more time. :)

That would be a game changer. And the cherry on top would be adding motion blur right from there.

I too was most excited about this update. (OS X 10.15.7- Mac pro 2013) 17.4 Studio

I too am finding the while the ease in/out shows up in the curves for position and size, they are not synched.

Using some stills, I find the zoom ease works well, but the position lags afterwards. Please see example below. I have ease in and out on pos X, Pos Y, zoom X and Zoom Y. I had to add curve on x and Y separately, while one curve worked for setting zoom X and Y.

Also I was hoping this would work in the transform viewer window "smooth" also, but it seems if I do just a pan on a picture it will just "smooth" either the in point or the out point, not both.

Hoping this gets sorted out as it's such a needed feature for anyone doing editorial work.

This is inevitable I think, because zoom is not linearly related to position in this kind of motion. Dynamic zoom functionality works around that by manipulating the position offset so that element moves in a straight line between start and end position during zoom. It is easy to do with some math but not so easy with manipulating curves directly.

It's been so many years but I seem to recall FCP 7 working better for easing in Stills, so I imagine it is possible.

Yes it's possible.
Fully automated in Premiere Pro since the early 90s. Just select bezier/Ease in out at the position you want, and you get perfectly synched zoom and positioning every time, with one mouse click!

Even in 17.4, the process of zooming and positioning a clip is arcane, and MUCH harder than it should be.
I don't want to have to adjust ease in/out curves in a little box under the clip.
What would take literally 2 seconds in PP, takes probably 4 minutes to do in DR. It is almost easier to set up a Fusion Comp to get the required effect. It's one of the very few things that DR doesn't do well.
