Alpha channel differences between Resolve and Premiere

PostFri Oct 22, 2021 7:29 pm

I'm overlaying some graphics over video that have semi-transparent layers created in After Effects. When I add them in Resolve the transparency is different (more opaque, but not entirely opaque) than if I do the exact same operation in Premiere. Premiere looks correct. Resolve does not.

I'm using Normal composite mode in both systems. Any clue why they look different and what I can do to have Resolve match Premiere?

Hi Ian,

I think a bit more info, like project, sequence and clip details (eg is it color managed?)... and exactly how you are compositing the graphic (Edit Page or Fusion Page)... might be helpful for troubleshooting the problem and finding workflow solutions for you.

If possible, please also go ahead and share one of the graphics for testing.

Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the reply. Here's more info.

Color Science: DaVinci YRGB (not color managed)
Timeline Color Space: Rec709-A

I'm compositing in the Edit Page, composite mode Normal.

I'm attaching screen shots from Resolve and from Premiere. The actual animation is too large to share.

In the Media Pool, open Clip Attributes for the file/sequence in question and check what the Alpha Mode is. If it's Premultiplied, set it to Straight. Or vice versa. Does that help?

@TheBloke

I was so hoping that would work, but alas it doesn't.

The animation clip alpha mode is straight.

If I change it to Premultiplied, the opacity doesn't change, but it darkens the entire image, not just the animation.

Hey Ian
In your Premiere timeline settings, if your turn off the 'Composite in Linear Color' option, does it match Resolve? And can you share a bit more technical info regarding the AE generated graphic eg What is the opacity level in the composition? What is the codec of the exported graphic etc? So folks might try and replicate the issue to figure out whats up.
Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy,

Yes, turning off "Composite in Linear Color" made it match Resolve.

It turns out that the test clip the animators sent me to test the workflow had alpha set to Premultiplied. Then all of the actual clips were set to Straight. Those clips composite correctly in Resolve. It looks like it was the test clip that sent me down this unnecessary rabbit hole!

Thanks for your help!
