5X Faster on Mac vs Top of the line PC laptop

PostFri Oct 22, 2021 7:47 pm

Resolve keeps saying it is 3x, 4x or 5x faster on these new macs. Do we now feel that Resolve is faster overall than a top spec PC laptop?

I currently have an Asus Studiobook and was looking at upgrading to the newest version:

But if Resolve is more optimized for mac I may consider doing something I never thought I'd do and go back to the Apple world.

I suspect we'll see a boost on Windows once the DirectStorage API takes off. I would wait a while unless I needed a new machine right now.

If battery life and thermals are important, the new MacBooks are hard to beat.

For desktop I wouldn't bother with Macs quite yet.

Second that.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

I read that the GPU in the new apple laptop is similar to 3080 Mobile version. If that is true then its impressive.

I remember reading about people disappointed with the performance of Resolve M1 in comparison to FinalCut, and the reason(guess) given for this was that Final Cut made by Apple had better access to the M1 chip and understanding of the M1 technology. Now this is not so

So to see if you wanted a M1 Mac now look for comparisons between FinalCut and top spec Windows Machines using Resolve doing various tasks until comparisons between Resolve 17.4 M1 and Windows becomes available. There will be the same limitations, some tasks require the brute power of a powerful GPU which M1 doesn't have

Thanks, guys. the marketing teams throw out these numbers... 5X faster. I am like was Resolve that slow on mac? I don't care about 8 streams of 8K... can I put together something in Fusion and it plays smoothly? Doubt it... even my RTX Titan on my desktop can't... lol

The comparison mostly made is it's equal to GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU, but although it's performance is like that with many tasks, I don't think it is that powerful. M1 has ways to do things more efficiently. But where a GPU task can not be made more efficient using one of M1's tricks and a task requires brute GPU power it most likely would perform worse. The extra efficiency of 5nm can only do so much. M1 Mac mini as example uses half the power of the 1660ti GPU alone

make of that what you will. all i can say is throwing wads of cash at minor improvements never made business sense to me.

You're so right, which is why it makes more sense to get one of the new MacBook Pros with the M1 Pro or M1 Max chip rather than the outdated Macs in the comparison you so generously shared.

Has Apple actually claimed that? For the most part they're claiming faster than an Intel Mac. Those Intel Mac aren't exactly current. Everything from older CPUs to the GPU choices.

On a different forum a M1 owner compared it to his desktop with a 3080. The M1 was 7X slower running a denoise package on stills.

NB in less than a week that 11th gen laptop you're looking at become old. 12th gen CPUs launch I think the 28th.
