Well below real-time playback after 17.4 upgrade

Hi!

Unfortunately my experience with the latest 17.4 is poor. I cannot playback in real time a project from 17.3.2 version. Mostly h264 and h265, some ProRes422 in 4K HDR session.

My computer is Mac Pro 2013, 128GB RAM, 2x eGPU 6800XT, DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K, 20TB SSD, Mac OS 12.0.1

I found that my previously cached nodes were no longer cached and 'user mode' isn't working correctly so things like noise reduction nodes weren't caching (and hence no real-time playback). Do you have any effects that you were expecting would be render-cached?

10fps playback after 17.4 upgrade

Hi!

M1 systems may be faster but fully loaded Mac Pro 2013 is playing back my 25fps footage (4K h264, h265) without any color correction @ 10fps.
The 17.3.2 was completely fine.
Sorry something is broken in 17.4 on Intel side,

Regards
Andrzej

All the shots unfortunately. It even doesn't matter if cached, rendered or not.

can you check if the eGpu is working correctly, recognized by resolve and with the right CUDA/Metal/OpenGL selected?

One important observation:

I have only 2xAMD 6800XT TB2 eGPUs selected for Resolve use, the internal D500 is deselected.
While playback h264 4K using 17.3.2 I can see just D500 20% activity and smooth playback.
While playback h264 4K using 17.4. I can see D500 and AMD 6800XT activity and very poor playback...

Is your monitor connected to D500 or eGPU? If it's connected to eGPU, it's important you set the OpenGL for desktop compositing to be run on the eGPU. You can do this by going into Display arrangement, and dragging the menu bar to that eGPU where the monitors are connected.

If this doesn't help, as a test, can you plug out your eGPUs, and see if you can play back in real-time a h264 8-bit clip, or ProRes HD clip?

Resolve didn't like to use all 3 GPUs (2x6800XT and D500) the rendering/playback was worse than using just 2x6800XT. So I unchecked the D500 and it worked very well within 17.3.2

My UI monitor is connected directly to D500.
The Mini Monitor 4K is my Video output which is connected to my grading monitor.

It's late night in here, tomorrow I'll check if disconnecting eGPUs speed up the playback

If the D500 is not in the mix, try putting the UI monitor on the eGPU.

1. Disconnecting eGPUs brings back the normal playback speed.
2. I did a test and attached the UI monitor to the second eGPU. It is unfortunate because I have to disconnect the eGPUs when starting up, the computer will not boot with both eGPUs btw. I have no log-in screen using eEGPUs.
Ok I did 2 tests:

- With all 3 GPUs selected the playback speed is ok BUT the rendering/caching is very slow. Unfortunately the eGPU is almost idling at 1% of load and the slowest/oldest D500 GPU get all the load, which is very unfortunate and I would like to avoid such a scenario.

- Even when I deselect the D500 and keep 2x eGPUs all the GPU load goes to D500... so it's not working for me either.

My thoughts:
Looks like my original setup was optimal for my system (D500 connected to UI monitor, and 2x eGPU on separate TB buses). It was efficient and fast because of proper eGPU utilization.
Unfortunately with 1% of the eGPU rendering load I'm wasting the real power of very fast AMD 6800XT GPUs.

The question:
Is there any chance to get back to the Resolve 17.3.2 behavior on the 17.4? That would solve the problems.
I was a happy Resolve user and upgraded many many times until now.
Otherwise I'll be stuck on the 17.3.2 forever :/

Regards
Arti

Okay, connect your monitor back to D500, and the two eGPUs, enable them for processing, and test Resolve, and then grab logs using Help menu, and attach a link to it here (Dropbox/Google Drive etc).

Yesterday I did such a test with my default configuration (D500 connected to UI monitor not used by Resolve, 2x6800XT in eGPUs selected in Resolve) in such a case playback speed is slow.

I don't know if it's related, but I have very poor playback (unusable) and export speed (16 fps with a RTX 3090, on Windows) when I have a Text+ title with Character Level Styling on it (from Fusion). Do you have something like this on this particular project?

Hi, I think it's not related. Even without text and Fusion the playback slowdown is huge.
I think something has changed between 17.3.2 and 17.4 in the way Resolve is using the internal GPU and eGPUs.

I don't remember if it was this thread or another:

Go to settings
Color management
3d lookup table interpolation

If it is tethrahearal, switch it to trilinear

Check if you have playback.

Thank you for your hint!
But unfortunately it is trilinear.

I notice you show Monterey as your OS.
As that is a few hours old, I wanted to ask if you updated to 17.4 before or after the OS update.
Maybe your issue is a combination of both factors.

I was using Monterey beta since summer without any issues on previous Resolve versions.
