H264 codec version and GPU is work or fail for DaVinci

Hi,
trying to get to the bottom of why mp4 clips from a Sony camcorder cause media Offline to happen (when the address to them is not the cause, as I place them on PC then straight into Resolve !),
I am about to buy EXPENSIVE SSD to get speed to solve it, yet not gain a single Mb of space as they dont make 2.5 or 3Gb,

and I see this which says you need a video card that suits the H264 codec so DaVinci will work !
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/artic ... udio-2122/

I am GTX970 and its not even listed, turning win7 into win10 I am not changing a perfectly good GPU. Works fine on Premiere but I want stable 4K editing, cannot afford Premiere cloud, I wont do subs, (as progs doing subs will suck my bank account dry as I use many progs) and DaVinci does 4K, in theory.

Is it that DaVinci only works with some cards then ?

Or is Sony making .mp4 with a codec that doesnt work with video editor DaVinci ?

I edited some 4K last year ok, now new footage is saying media offline.

Your GTX 970 will work fine with Resolve 17.xx as it supports CUDA 11. I see no reason why it shouldn't support h264. Mp4 is a container which holds the codec, so for instance, if you play an mp4 video with the likes of VLC or Windows Media Player you are playing H264.

With 4GB of vram you will probably have to use proxy settings for UHD, especially if you use frame rates like 50 or 60fps. I can run 50fps UHD footage with my GTX 1060 if I use a proxy setting.

Make sure the driver is up to date by going to nvidia.com.

As to SSDs they are available in 2 and 4TB sizes. The Sandisk 4TB one is around £500.00 however.
I have a 1TB Samsung for the system and a 500MB one for current files that I am editing. When finished projects get archived onto 3TB spinners so freeing up the SSD.

The media offline problem may be caused by your current storage, but also if you are using the free version of Resolve and the clips are 10bit. For 10bit clips you will need the Studio version of Resolve.

Just to reinforce that most crucial question: is it a studio or a free version? Free version will only read 8 bit 4:2:0 XAVC.

Hi David

Given your post history, it is still not clear whether you're asking about Windows 10 or Windows 7 - or about Resolve Studio or Free. If you have a concern with typing the same info over and over again, the FAQs recommend adding important hardware, OS, driver and version info to your signature. There are several users - Charles included - who offer good examples of pertinent signature info.

For a start, I'll list the steps for Windows 10. Please check what codecs the Sony file uses. A third party program like MediaInfo can break it down well. Second, check drivers and ensured your H.265 package from Windows is up to date. If your GTX 970 is not listed, that is the first problem to solve - ensure it can be seen by Resolve. Lastly, if it still does not work, you may want to provide a link to the file for other users to try. This can help determine if the issue is local to your setup or a generic DaVinci Resolve issue.

Regards
Shrinivas

Hi,
I am running Win7 64bit pro, free version DaVinci Resolve. V17 when that issue existed, now on v 11 lite.
With 4GB of vram you will probably have to use proxy settings for UHD, especially if you use frame rates like 50 or 60fps. I can run 50fps UHD footage with my GTX 1060 if I use a proxy setting.

the 4K camcorder (UHD I see 4K is also called) only offers 25fps for 4K, and 25 or 50 fps (I always use 50) for HD
here is the Media Info for both clips, as JPG attached, not those that gave the media offline error but all from the same stable !

I have just tried both in v11 lite and so far so good, tried a razor blade cut as well.

perhaps it was v17 with win7 ?

Charles, thanks, I am going to go for 2Tb SSD, speed solved ! damn nuisance I cant get a 3Tb, i see no reason why they dont make such. I will have to keep unloading the drive all the time.

Win 7 is your main problem. Though some users have got Resolve to run under Win 7, from version 14 the requirement has been Win 10.
These are the current minimum requirements which are fine for HD but not UHD.
