Best converter to import DVD file to DaVinci Resolve

PostSun Oct 24, 2021 3:44 pm

I have a very small number of videos which I think are in DVD format because of the file structure:

These videos were taken from some old Sony Hi8 tapes. They play OK using VLC media player.
Please can someone tell me the recommended software and procedure to prepare these files so that DaVinci Resolve can import them?
I did a search here but ended up gong down blind alleys with no real answer.
Thanks,
Michael

The first issue is Resolve is not designed to run on W8.1.

The easiest converter around is Shutter Encoder.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

I have managed to open VOB files in Davinci Resolve 17.4, without having to encode them first.

To make it possible I have used the free TsMuxer app that converts the VOB into M2TS.
This M2TS is compatible with Davinci Resolve.

The important thing about the process is that the file is not encoded, and it retains its original quality.
In addition, the operation is very fast.

Thanks for replying. Sorry for delayed response.
Resolve is working on my W8.1 laptop at the moment while I try it out prior to, hopefully, upgrading. I plan to move to Linux in the near future so if there are any issues with W8.1 these should go away with that change of OS.

Thanks for the suggestions, Shutter Encoder and TsMuxer. I'll try them and see how I get on.

Indeed, this worked for well for me too, in Resolve 18. It can also join the separate .VOB files from a DVD into a single .m2ts file, so you get the DVD as a single clip in Resolve.

It's an open source project hosted on Github, and works on Mac, Windows and Linux. And you don't need to compile it. It's releases page has the directly usable executables for all 3 OSes, both as a GUI program and also as a command-line program usable in scripts.

If you don't mind (or prefer) re-encoding the original DVD, you can use Handbrake. It's a GUI (also open source, and also for Mac, Win or Linux) with many options like de-interlacing, resizing, etc.
