Can't place transitions between clips

PostThu Nov 04, 2021 5:07 pm

I just upgraded to Davinci Resolve Studio 17.4.1 Build 4 and have noticed the following odd behavior:

For new clips that have been added to the timeline, I am unable to drag-N-drop video transitions and have them overlap adjacent clips. It only places the transition on one of the clips with no overlap. See attached image for example.

I found I can fix for this by inserting the default transistion using the "DIS" button on the Speed Editor (which overlaps between clips as expected), and then dragging and dropping the actual video transition I want over top of that.

Bug or some change in the functionality I am missing?

thanks!

A transition has to have video to come from and go to, and enough of an overlap, or "handles" to cover the length of the transition. This quick video I made might help.

Nice video, Charles!

Yeah, this is why one of the first things you discover when you start to edit videos is that way back when you actually shot the clip you needed to have shot a few seconds of extra footage before the action starts and after the action ends. Those "margins" around the action (which are called "handles" in the Resolve world) let you add transitions, and they also give you more flexibility in moving the edit points around a bit to adjust the pacing.

Thanks, Sean. As this topic crops up occasionally I thought it was so much easier to make a video than try to explain the concept with just words. :D

In cases where you don't have enough material pre- and post-transition, sometimes you can hobble by using the method of starting with a slo-mo version of the clip, ramping to normal speed, then going to slo-mo again (or even a freeze) at the end. Done well, it's almost impossible to see unless there's a lot of movement in it. Added grain will "sell" the effect even more.

Hi, charles, mine is different. It can not be place between, but always place on first clip or second clip only.

That usually means that the handle on one or both of the clips is not quite long enough so the transition will not centre on the edit.

Thanks charles.
Hi, what do you mean with 'handle of the clip is not quite long enough'? Where is the handle located? Is it someframe on the edge of both side of the clip?

A handle is the term used for the amount of overlapping video of each clip. So if you trim 1 second off the end of clip 1 and do the same off the front of clip 2 and butt them up together, you can place a 2 second crossfade in the middle. If one or other of the overlapping sections is shorter than that 1 second you will get the result you are seeing. Have a look at my short video posted earlier.

An adjunct to this if you have the Speed Editor. In the Edit page, with two clips just butted up together without handles, pressing the TRANS key will apply a dissolve at the edit point and ripple the clips to accommodate it.

Every now and then, I have such an issue aswell. When I then (using the Speed Editor) split a tiny peace of the following clip (where the transition is going to) I can then place a transistion.

Maybe that helps somehow

The easier thing to understand :
if you have first clip max duration 10s, bring it to timeline (without trim). Then butt together with another clip, and add default transition between it (ctrl+T).
The transition will not work and will display popup that there is no enough handle.
Trim the first clip to 9s, it will remain 1s to be 'the handle' and the transition will work.

Thanks very much Charles for your quick and clear explanation on Youtube.

I had been perplexed by this Transitions issue and found this thread by coincidence whilst browsing the forum. I use a Cross Dissolve of 1 second / 25 frames (UK) as a default via Ctrl+T for multiple short clips and I kept getting the Resolve popup shown in the JPEG below. I've been clicking on "Trim Clips" and that works fine. Now I know that it only occurs when I hadn't previously trimmed clips :- )

For what it's worth, I am new to Resolve (free) but not new to editing. While trying to add transitions I was encountering the problem and I was NOT happy with the idea of mousing around with handles every time a transition was not "behaving" properly. While my workflow is conducive to the following "fix" I can't say it will work for everybody.

In a nutshell: while in the media pool if I select a file and select "Insert Selected Clips to Timeline Using Handles" the problem is no longer a problem! Even better was the ability to assign a keyboard shortcut for that action.

Hope this helps!

Also, if you have made a selection with In and Out points before dragging it to the timeline. most times you will have enough material to cover the transitions without having to add handles.

I have the same issue sometimes, but I don't think it's because I don't have enough footage. If I close Resolve, then the video transitions continue being placed properly, in between both clips. Normally I use V to select the nearest edit point, then use ALT + T to apply the standard transition. This issue happens whenever I have to select a clip for whatever reason (e.g. I have to delete a clip, shorten a clip, etc.). When I do this, often applying the standard transition will apply to one side of the clip, and this behavior will continue for all clips thereafter. I can fix this by saving, closing Resolve, and then relaunching Resolve.

I'm not sure why this is happening, though.

Also, it's worth mentioning that I haven't figured out any way to fix the issue within Resolve, not even doing "Deselect All" works. The only thing I've found that works is closing Resolve and relaunching it.

Probably you don't have enough frames for handles. You can use right mouse click on the transition to give you option to add frames and if there is not enough ti will ask to trim it for you and add cross dissolve. As Peter Riding has mentioned before.

If you right click on the transition again, you can open new set of options including converting to fusion transition and modifying in fusion or saving a new preset.

Another alternative is to fake a fade-to-colour transition by just fading out the end of one clip and fading in the start of the other (which will give the same effect as a fade-to-black transition, if there's nothing below the track.) Or drop a solid colour generator under there for a fade to a selected colour.

#METOO I spent 20 mins on this...

After an update, DaVinci switched the preference selection in User to SECONDS instead of FRAMES which I had selected before and gave a 20 frames value. The default seconds value became 0.08s for me, therefore I couldn't apply any transitions anymore.

To check and setup your default transition preferences:

Preference>User>Editing>Standart Duration Transition> set ( <10f <0.5s)

Hope that helps some of you!
