It will depend on the program in question as to what is best, irrispective of the Operating System. For many/most programs you just install new versions and upgrades over the top of the old system. It is the instalation program/scripts that are key here. They have got a lot better over the last 40 years.
For a lot of programs uninstalling first can be the worst thing to do. Unless you really need to start with a clean machine and start from scratch.
Looking at the history of Resolve I can understand why it had problems in the past. However they should be putting in checks so that you don't overwrite a Studio version with the Free Version unless you explicity confirm the action. Or the otherway around (free to Studio) unless you enter a licence key. Though in my case it picked up the licence automatically sothe Free version didn't kill that. Which is not good in general even though it saved my sking this time. (but I should have been stopped in the first place.)
BTW Thanks for spotting the source of the problem. That I was on the free version!
