Display timline as frames

PostTue Nov 23, 2021 6:55 am

Hi all - I've googled this to no avail, is there a way to display the timeline as frames instead of a timecode? This is very useful for animators because frames are rendered with sequential numbers... not a timecode.

Coming from a Premiere background after 5 years I think Resolve is vastly superior in many ways but switching to frames was important, so this would definitely be on my wishlist.

Right-click on the Timecode in the top right of each viewer to get this menu:

You can't change the main Timeline timecode display (the one in the top left of the timeline, above the track names). But you can get the frame number visible for the current timeline, in the top right of the timeline viewer. And if you enable the Timecode Window, it follows the setting of the viewer.

Awesome thanks, having it in the preview window is fine.

The only other thing I'm trying to figure out RE sequential frames is refreshing the footage. I've searched the forum and this appears to be a big problem for 3D artists like me.

e.g. if I render frames 200-300 and do some grading, then later render 1-200 and want to expand the same clip so its all 300 frames, what is the best way to refresh? Replace Selected Clip doesn't let me selected an image sequence, only a single file?

Do Replace Selected Clip and select any one of the frame files. It'll update the frame range to every frame that's now in that folder. It doesn't matter which single frame you choose when you do Replace, it'll always scan every frame in that folder and update the clip to include every frame that now exists on disk.

Thanks that works. But it doesn't keep any of the settings / grading etc. Is that a bug?

Appears to be working here Paul,
I just tested Replace Clip in the Media Pool on an image sequence which was already used (and graded) in my timeline... the updated clip retained the grade without issue. Can you be more specific about what, how, when and where you're seeing settings / grade being lost? There might be a specific scenario with a bug that's perhaps not immediately obvious otherwise. Fwiw, I only tested on my Mac laptop, not the PC.
Cheers
Andy

Hi sorry I missed this - it appears to be working now and Replace Clip is retaining the grade. I'm not sure what happened before as I autosaved over it.

Replace Clip does however remove any ACES Input Transforms (which I had set to ACEScg), but that is not a huge deal.
